How long do you have to execute a no-fee change when QF changes the schedule?

A 6 weeks ago one of QF awards had a schedule change. I didn't accept or confirm it.

I called in today to say "I don't like the change, please cancel the ticket and refund in full".

Platinum desk (routing to South Africa) said "yes, we can, as a one-time courtesy, as you should have acted on the schedule change right away".

I didn't ask "how long is right away", as we know this is nothing written down.

But my question for the forum - could you (theoretically) cancel a ticket 24h before departure, without penalty, for a schedule change that occurred many months prior? (wow, that grammar tricky yes)

I suspect not as at some stage they need to confirm your ticket one way or another and 24h is definitely too close.

As for how long you have, I think that's a grey area they deliberately leave vague.

I've had involuntary changes proposed 6 months out when travelling os that didn't suit and waited till I was back in Aus 5 weeks later to get a better result over the phone. It wasnt an issue; but dont think Id leave only a day or two out (unless I was wanting a refund).
