Locking the J toilet door

LOL. I never said that.

Per my original comment - loos should be available. It is easy to see then that if vacant they should not be locked.

Excellent but what does that have to do with locking the loos?.

can indeed be a straw man argument because I have not argued that snacks should be freely available from any cabin nor have I argued that a vacant J seat should be freely available to anyone who wants it. The thread is about the availability of loos

What's the problem locking the loos if you've committed to asking the FA prior to use? Should only be a problem if pax help themselves without asking.

Beyond that it sounds like you're arguing for an idea with no matter of practicality or answering obvious flaws in how it would work. Cabins are separate for a reason and if you had your way and pax were allowed to roam freely (or even with permission, but unsupervised) things like J snacks would have to be locked away. It would be a downgrade to the peace & quiet of the other cabins.

If by exception the pax has a compelling reason and asks then that's fine, but sounds like you're arguing pax don't even need a reason. The title of this thread (and a similar one in VA) suggests this is being enforced so FAs do have a problem with it also. That's great IMO.

One minor issue is that you may not genuinely know if the toilet is occupied or not, since the indicator essentially is red all the time. Minor, but so there...

I'm don't support the door being locked only because that's making it more difficult even for J pax to track when it's free; but it shows you the lengths at which they are taking to enforce it. We've all seen the countless pax helping themselves to the J loo and IME they almost never ask. It's quite often I'm in J waiting for the loo to be free, and just as I go to get up a Y pax comes storming through. When I'm a Y pax even in row 4 I never use the J loo - I don't want conflict with the FA.

Bring back the curtain. The curtain solves all.

It would most likely minimise things but from experience it is not a guarantee.

I've seen enough people go through the curtain (no, they are not J pax that went to visit the Y cabin) - they know there is a toilet up front even if they can't see it - same on VA where people unstick and go through the cord. It is admittedly less than with no barriers at all, but I also attribute a lot of it to changing behaviour on aircraft (i.e. pax conduct on average has gone down).

Yes but it signals that the FA or CSM intends to enforce the restrictions

Put a boarding pass scanner on the toilet door?

Make pax do the walk of shame a la boarding group queue jumpers.

Maybe all toilets can be used by everyone but have priority loo access queues, just like boarding ;)

Forget the toilets. What they need (on the long haul aircraft) is a separate change room so that people who want to change into pajamas don't block people who actually need to use the toilet from doing so.
