Qantas' New A321XLR

Missed opportunity to install a J cabin like AA, lie-flat for flights to DPS/Asia etc.

I guess when there's limited competition, they can get away with it
Also evident when QF's 737 refurbs are ripping out the PTVs (replaced with wireless IFE) to save weight similar to their hybrid budget carrier rival.

I pretty much always bring my own tablet, though I understand it would be frustrating for families. Purchasing and carrying multiple tablets would add up quickly.

Qantas Group have a lot of 32Xs on order/ option. There will highly likely be a second config in the future.

But at least initially these will be domestic aircraft replacing the oldest 332s and 737s.

Vanessa Hudson currently in Hamburg to view the plane on the Airbus production line (AFR report on their app) . Interesting story on her, if you can access (I can't find it on their web page).

Do we know when Qantas will publish the seat maps?
We know it'll be 20J 180Y for the first three, and then 177Y for the next deliveries, until when/if they decide on a sub-fleet for med-haul intl or premium transcon. But seat maps aren't usually published till they take delivery.

Thanks! Do we know the reason why the first 3 are 180Y & the remainder 177Y?

Thry realised their mistake with having 170+ pax (more than current 737) and only having 2 toilets. That extra row will be removed for a third toilet.

I wonder how many extra-legroom Y seats there will be?
Apart from the 12 exit row seats, there are another few rows with extra legroom (unsure of the exact number) which will likely be chargeable. At least one of them is behind the exit rows and the others are near the front.

What about J? 1 toilet is not a lot for 20 passengers, when 1 currently does 12 passengers

Agreed. It's still just 1 for 20 at the moment.

I'm willing to guess.
Rows 1-5 AC DF = 20 J
Rows 6-35 ABC DEF = 180 Y

35ABC later replaced with toilet (given IBs map below guessing thats where the plumbing is)

Exit rows at probably 15/16.
Awkward windows at 25/26 with the rear door option not taken up (only needed for configs above 200 pax)

You can see IBs 321XlR which also has 35 row (albeit with 7 rows of 1/1 angled business here)

Should be closer to the AA layout, almost identical seat count / type

Assume you mean this one: Why Vanessa Hudson’s kids didn’t want her to be Qantas CEO

Report asked: if Qantas had exercised its option to buy new Dreamliner aircraft in 2014 to replace its A330s, would the fleet now be almost perfect?

“No. Because in 2014 the international business was losing hundreds of millions of dollars, and you can’t buy aircraft when you’re losing so much money,” she says.

“The A330s at the time were actually quite young. They’re the realities – you can’t just keep buying aircraft and put them into a business that’s not returning.”

Investors are already raising concerns about Qantas’ spending plans – particularly in the international division – but the airline says it has flexibility to respond, as it did in 2014, if there is an unforeseen bump in the road. Hudson adds that Qantas has a longer capex horizon for its planes than Asian airlines, which rotate their fleets every 12 years.

“What I know about fleet renewal at Qantas before Alan, and it’ll be after Alan and after me – we have always flown the aircraft to the end of their life,” she says.

“We flew the 747s until they were 20. We flew the 767s until they were 20. We will fly the 737s, the A330s and the A380s until they’re around 20 years old.”

So they'll retire the oldest 737-800s soon?
VH-VX* series are all over 20. VH-VYA thru VYC are also over 20. VYD thru VYH turn 20 this year.
A330-300s VH-QPA thru QPG are over 20. QPH thru QPJ turn 20 this year.
A330-200s VH-EBA thru EBD are also over 20.

Once they get enough A321XLR deliveries or once they start getting enough younger 737 aircraft back from refurbishment, they should then be in a position to retire the oldest 737 aircraft.

Initially, the first A321XLR will probably enable the capacity to be able to start refurbishing the younger 737 aircraft with the new seats etc.
