Some suggestions on Reddit that he might have forgotten to manually close DRS
(Given drivers take that turn flat out they don't brake which is the normal procedure)

It's a strange one though. You can see on the onboard that the DRS light is on (suggesting DRS was open as he turned into the corner), however no matter how many times I look at the other angles, I cannot for the life of me see his DRS as being physically open, making me think it's potentially a DRS failure. Either way, nobody wants to hit a tyre barrier at 331km/h 185mph / 300km/h (as confirmed by Tedd Kravitz via Alpine)😖.

Intrigued to hear the actual cause after the data analysis from Alpine.
Jack definitely did not need it regardless of the cause, poor guy.

On another note, stop the clock under red flag...
20mins odd driving, due to 4 reds in the 60min session is a joke, for the spectators as well as the drivers.

It's certainly disappointing for spectators (and not ideal for drivers who have little experience with a given circuit), however... as a "penalty", it's applied evenly to all drivers and teams, and given we're in the 4th year of the current regulations, all of the teams will have huge volumes of setup and vehicle data that enables them to largely offset the lack of running time. It's arguably not much different to when teams and drivers do minimal running in wet conditions in a given FP session when those conditions are not representative of what they're expecting in quali and/or the race.

All that being said, I very much agree that the optics are not ideal and I would not be thrilled as a paying spectator.

Yeah, more from the paying spectator position.
Even to get tickets for one day of the 3 for an F1 weekend can be quite expensive at some venues (I went to Vegas 2023), so to have the action diminished in such scenarios is a pretty poor outcome for the paying fan. I'm sure its also governed by tv scheduling as well as other racing categories timeslots needing to be kept on schedule (not at every venue) as well. Just frustrating to "watch".
