Ok so I'm looking at some amazingly cheap flights, SIN - CDG via Finland on Finnair, which i'm stoked about being they are a OW carrier.

So, anyone ever flown with them?

What are they like?

Any good?

Cheers

Have done 4 J trips and really love them. The transfer in Helsinki is a breeze, friendly service on board... I say definitely give them a go. Only down side is you won't get your status bonus on AY.

The catering is cheap. Snacks and alcohol after meal service costs. But overall decent carrier.

Is that in Y? Because in J it is just as good as QF, well except for the fact that they don't have bourbon! They do have some nice reds though :)

I did a PVG-HEL, HEL-OSL-HEL, HEL-JFK in J with them last September and would fly with them again any time.

Is that in Y?

Yep. Defaulted to Y as J wasnt mentioned.

Im also not too impressed with the HEL lounges. HEL is a nice transit airport, but not a big fan of the airport as a whole.

I haven't flown with them (yet) but I do have a J BKK-HEL-FCO booked for August and am really looking forward to it. New J looks really nice, am reading good things about transitting in HEL and the product generally. Price was excellent as well :)

Interestingly I booked direct with AY and my booking automatically shows up on my QF FF bookings page.

If you go do a trip report! :)

Cheers

This is an interesting Europe option out of SIN that I might try sometime. I assume it would be QF to SIN first before being on AY metal? So not quite the same as the old Austrian Airlines setup.

My last few years worth of Australia-Europe travel have all been on Finnair, with QF between PER and HKG or NRT, although now SIN is also an option.

I always really enjoy the service and the longhaul onboard product in Y is great, except for the extra costs for alcohol after meal service. They used to have a self-serve snack bar in Y on the A340s but I believe they've disappeared now. The only QF longhaul Y hard product that is on par or better is the A380, AY's beats the standard QF longhaul Y offering in my opinion.

Transiting at HEL is great, as long as it isn't too long. I've done 45 minute Asia-Europe connections there easily and comfortably, but when you have to wait more than 90 minutes it's no good. Although, I've never had lounge access there, so I'm commenting only from a pure Y customer perspective.

What about investing the savings in the Priority Pass - I assume HEL has a Priority lounge (though wouldn't know if it's any good)

And I remember good old times when alcohol was free on all Finnair flights ...last flew with them in 2002 but until then AY had been my carrier of choice (I lived in LED then) and if things haven't considerably changed since then - they are very good. Consistently good service and an overall solid product. Better than their main rival SAS

I've just returned from Europe flying Finnair economy using Qantas FF points. I was concerned that I may not have access to their lounges (Lifetime Gold), and check in might not be at the business counters. Finnair is now codesharing with Qantas.

I was pleasantly surprised. At check in and lounges, I was treated extremely well, and warmly received every time. They gave me the best seats at the emergency exit. The only brief hiccup was at a lounge in Helsinki, when I was told that my Lifetime Gold card had expired because it was dated about 1990. However, when I pointed out (as written on the card) that it was lifetime membership, all was well.

Their seating in economy was as good as it gets. I'll be happy to use them again. It was better than Qantas putting me on Jetstar (with a Qantas flight no.) and having to buy meals.

Overall, a good experience.

I'm a huge fan of Finnair. Value for money in J is so hard to beat, especially when we are talking OW carriers. I've connected with CX, BA & QF out of Australia, and when getting on an AY flight, I feel just as comfortable. The seats I've had everytime are the older seats (not completely horizontal), but slept well, and the service was faultless.

Big tick from me!

It all sounds positive. I might try Finnair J next year on one of my Uk trips. The pricing seems very good. :)

I've flown them in both J & Y and both were good (though I would obviously prefer to fly J again). The connection in HEL is great as you go through customs there as the first entry point into the EU and that takes a few minutes of the usually very quick transit time. They have the shortest minimum connetion time in Europe as it is a small airport and not as busy as say FRA, PAR, LON, etc. The other advantage to AY is they have heaps of Asian options to pick up in so you can go via SIN/BKK/HKG/SHA/TYO, etc. and it can be different on the return. Certainly a good option for Europe but they don't have a J class cabin for intra-Europe so if you are flying J you won't be from HEL to your destination. I would fly them again. :)

Depending on which aircraft you get they do the same as like BA and change 3 eco seats in 2 business. Or same as QF 737-400. Also the food you get upfront is heaps better then at the back. They are my first choice for trips back home.

I'm flying them in J BKK-HEL-FCO in late August. Really looking forward to the experience! Will try to do a trip report :)

i am about to book a July trip HKG-HEL-CDG with AY in J. It will cost be about A$3900 return which is the cheapest OW carrier from HKG to CDG.

Hopefully they have J class from HEL to CDG as it is over 3 hours.
