Hi all,

I've just signed up to these forums - looking to share some of my experiences when I can and hearing lots of yours... I'm 22, and have flown on 10 different carriers - I use air travel several times a year.

In February/March next year, I have booked flights on Finnair (AY), from Perth to Helsinki...

The Perth to Singapore is a codeshare operated by QF, but the long Singapore - Helsinki route is Finnair, on their A340-300.
I'm quite looking forward to this if I may say so :)

I've flown many times with Qantas domestic, however never Finnair - nor Qantas international for that matter!

If anyone has any experiences with Finnair, I'd love to hear them - particularly if you've 'long hauled' with them.
Look forward to hearing from you soon,
AY-QF

A couple years ago I flew AY HEL-JFK on what I think was an almost brand new A340. I was in Business but I was nonetheless very pleased with the offering. I especially like the soft blue colour scheme.

I have done a couple of Oz to Europe trips on AY, really enjoyed the short(ish) flights from BKK to HEL and the really short transfers. HEL is a small very efficient airport. Enjoy your trip!

From SIN to HEL? Mmmm. But as others have said, AY in J-class is pretty good. Even in Y-class they are better than most!

Sounds like a root we're all going to be taking.

Well there's always SQ655 that you could take to connect to the SIN-HEL flight. :p It originates in Fukuoka and I am not going to reproduce the IATA code here.

No real flights, but how cool would the bag tag be for a flight from Fukuoka to Innsbruck to Helsinki.

just did this exact route in whY. finnair plane was old(ashtray in armrests) with what seemed like very limited legroom and the worst entertainment system i've had the displeasure to use (tiny, blurry monitor). fortunately the plane was mostly empty down the back so shifted seats so could fully recline and stretch out and managed a couple of hours sleep. overall pretty disappointing and looking forward to doing future flights on virgin partners when status match comes through.

Hi paradox987,

Welcome to AFF. :D

Thanks for your informative first post. Six months between registering on the site and posting. Let's see some more posts sooner than another six months.

Sounds like you lucked out with one of Finnair's 2 ex-Air France A340s. They're a relatively new addition to the fleet and, assuming that all A340s have the opportunity to make it to SIN, there's a 29% chance that one would be unlucky enough to fly them on what is Finnair's longest flight. The easiest way to tell if you're scheduled to fly on one of them is to check the seating plan - in J there is one extra row (row 8) and in Y there is a row 34 which doesn't exist in the Finnair factory-fresh configs.
It's very disappointing that Finnair doesn't feel it worthwhile to refit these planes with the modern product found on their other planes; I'm assuming these will be the first aircraft to leave the fleet when they get their first A350s (2013).

I almost always travel to Europe on Finnair, using QF between Perth and Tokyo (sadly no longer) or Hong Kong. I'll be doing the SIN-HEL leg this December so it will be interesting to see if I still enjoy Finnair on a longer leg. The beauty of flying via NRT was that both flights were 10 hours long.

Save for the 2 ex-Air France A340s, Finnair's long haul fleet has always been a pleasure to fly in Y. The wide touch screen seatback PTVs, decent seats, good service and calm interior colour scheme are great. Sadly haven't had the opportunity to try J but it looks fine, especially the new J on half of the A330 fleet, although you're unlikely to see it unless you fly HEL-JFK or HEL-BKK.

Thanks for some interesting replies...

Seems to be a mixed bag of feedback on Finnair, from what you guys are mentioning and what is being said on Skytrax...

To V1213; it will be interesting to hear how your travels on the SIN-HEL route in December pan out - be sure to post your findings!

Suppose it's like anything really - opinion. There are always people who don't like versus people who do, so won't be long until I can see for myself.

At least it's not Tiger?

:)
