My mate has bought a pitching wedge on eBay and I am bringing it to Sydney for him. Is it allowed to be carried as hand luggage?

If I can't carry it as hand luggage, will I be able to check it through to Sydney only? I am flying BNE-SYD-LAX on QF.

I don't think golf clubs are allowed as hand luggage.

I can't see why you could not check it in BNE-SYD on the way to LAX.

I did witness this situation once in the states when a guy in front of me at check in tried to take a single golf club as carry on. He was told he had to check it as it could be used as a weapon. That was a few years ago but not much has changed. Personally I would ring the airline and ask them directly.

I remember the days that BA sold a mini golf bag for driver 9 iron and putter as cabin luggage...

Just make sure that you are travelling on a domestic flight only ie QF400 & above between BNE & SYD so you can collect your club at SYD Domestic T3 then hand it over to your friend. You can then proceed back upstairs to Gate 2 to take the shuttle around to the international terminal.

If you are booked on QF20 or QF8 BNE/SYD connecting to LAX you will have already been cleared out of the country by Customs at BNE Intl terminal so would not be able to come back through to the landside part of SYD Intl Terminal to collect your club from the baggage carousel which is within the customs area. Even if you remained airside, your friend could not just pick it up off the baggage carousel as it's in the restricted area.

Technically it could be possible to travel domestically on QF8 BNE/SYD with the orange D sticker thus allowing you to collect your club, give it to your friend then head back upstairs & go through Customs in SYD bound for your LA flight, however I would really avoid this situation at all costs due to its 'left of field' nature.

The KISS principle definitely applies here - Keep It Simple Stupid & I mean that in a nice way. :p :p

FAA should ban ninjas from going on a plane. They can break down the coughpit door with their bare hands!

Packing box tape banned - you might tie people up - Banned - the $2 a roll stuff.
Electrical cords - more than 2 or whatever they feel like - you might ties someone up.
Even when wearing C'wth pass.

We still have this nonsense - even though pax are not going to take it lying down.
BTW Umbrellas pretty much banned too.

But loudmouth intoxicated bogons allowed on, or children with the flu or worse.

Why not tape up the cardboard box first, then chuck the roll of packing tape into your suitcase before you check it in & save yourself the hassle.

You can definitely take umbrellas (even ones with a metal tip) through security at Australian airports.

One more thing - don't forget to double check the club is 'short tagged' to SYD & you suitcase has 'BNE/SYD/LAX' on the tag.

Even if you ask for it to be done that way it's easy for a CSA to accidentally print 2 tags to LAX or 2 to SYD so look carefully at the bag tag before you suitcase disappears off the conveyor belt & ditto for the club before you take it to oversize.
