I had a FF ticket booked onto VS200 Upper Class from HKG-SYD last night but the flight was cancelled for operational reasons so Virgin Atlantic transferred me to QF128 in Business Class leaving the same night.

It was interesting to spend 40,000 points to buy the seat on VA and end up with a 60,000 point reward seat on Qantas - The kicker was that I have just received a full credit for the flight as thought it was a paid seat.

Which I guess it was, from Qantas' point of view. Thanks very much to VA for the Qantas points + status credits, which instantly moved me to from Bronze to Silver and reduced the seat cost from 40,000 points to only 33,128 points. I was going to hit Silver anyway in a couple of weeks but my 11 year old son who accompanied me is now also Silver which is somewhat amusing.

Nice, if unrepeatable. Would still like to try the VA Upper Class product - their HKG Clubhouse was quite nice.

Just thought it interesting enough to report here - hope it is of interest to someone...

Funny that! It's happened to me, on a smaller scale.

My flight on JQ for OOL-MEL was cancelled as I arrived at the airport, I was only going down for the day.

Thinking we were going to be at the airport for hours, or get bussed to BNE. I was about to go home, when one of the staff said, "Hey, are you travelling alone?" He pulled be aside to say they are putting a couple of pax onto Virgin Australia, leaving in an hour, before you know it I was given a BP for 1C.

My $50 Jetstar flight turned into a $350 Virgin Australia PE fare with full Status Credits and Points. Was pretty happy. :D

So what's that 0.83c a status credit? New Record? :p

 Does that mean you might not be a "real" platinum!!!!! :p :p :p :D

Snaps for the OP - nice work!

You would have to beat 360 SCs for $25 for it to be a new record I believe.

Actually, I received heaps (forgot exactly how much now) of status credits for $0 as part of a dummy DONE booking that was subsequently cancelled.

Does that mean I win?

:p

There is an agreed rate charged between airlines in the event of disruptions so the airline who uplifts the pax often does a block booking for the pax in the one class eg JQ disrupts on QF are booked in "L" class so it matters not whether you were travelling on a redemption on the flight that was cancelled.

JQ disrupts on QF would earn QF ff points if they were a member of the QF f/flyer, would get meals, free baggage (one piece) even if they were on a JQ lite fare or an "X" class redemption as the original type of fare booked does not come into it. It's pretty much a seat for a seat.

You were entitled to receive a full credit from QF as it was a paid seat - courtesy of VS. :p The fare/award ticket that you had originally booked with VS isn't a factor in the event of a disruption.

As ozbeachbabe said, you got the full QF credit because you were FIM'd (VS paid 50% of the FULL J QF fare) onto the QF flight. From then on, you were a commercial J class pax on QF, so got the points/status etc. If your (un)lucky enough for it to happen again, you'll get the points again. Having said that, the VS J seats are nice, but way too hard to sleep comfortably in IMHO. The service is good too, but per usual out of Asian ports, the food, or at least the attempts at a western menu, is pretty poor.
