I haven’t been flying on QF much lately (and nor do I plan to in the next few months) and so I need 175 SCs in the next six weeks to retain SG. This is important to me as it makes the QF experience significantly more tolerable.

I was thinking of doing the SYD-MEL-HBA-MEL-SYD JASA run in the next couple of weeks but I think I’ll only earn 160 SCs for that. I can cope with that, as I can direct a planned DJ flight to QF and get over the line that way, however I was wondering if there is a better option than this “old chestnut”? Specifically - something that doesn’t require me to get up in the dark for a 6am flight! :)

I am doing a SYD-BNE-TSV return next month, flight leaves SYD at 7.35 (which is borderline acceptable for me :D ) and nets you 200SC's

Not a bad idea. I can do one of those next week for ~33K each way, which is similar to the other one I priced. It definitely leaves at more acceptable times. I then just need to decide between an overnight in TSV or an overnight in HBA. I imagine there is a similar amount of, or rather lack of, nightlife... ;)

I am doing 2 nights Magnetic Island as Townsville wasn't that exciting when I visited it a couple of years ago. I think for "nightlife" I would take Hobart. Have some good seafood on the wharf or a bit of a tacky dinner at the Drunken Admiral.

For a bit of variety you could try SYD TSV ADL? Or SYD DRW TSV!

Code:
JASA - SYD-xMEL-HBA - 80 SC's - 24K + $95 (or 32,503)
JASA - HBA-xSYD-CBR - 100 SC's - 16K + $100 (or 26,666)

Get back from CBR as you wish, e.g.:
Code:
YASA on Q400 is 8K + $65 [or 15,054]
 Classic Y is 8K + $40 [or 12,500]

Another thing to consider is banking some SCs by straddling your anniversary date, that is stop overnight in say Darwin and then travel on the first day of the new SC year, this routing is not bad for SC earn and time taken as it brings the points down to 72000 for the 360 SC and does not require more than 1 night away or positioning flights ex SYD:

Some great options there. I like serfty’s suggestion with the stop at CBR and I’m also interested in DRW. I’ve never been so it’s always good to go some place new.

As a complication, I noticed online just now that my anniversary date had been moved up a year and it appeared I had been comped SG for another year. With some trepidation I called QF and they confirmed the comp. The person I spoke to did say that I should still try to qualify myself if possible (maybe she’s trained to say that?) as they will take this into account and that may mean I get another comp at another time when I need it.

Interestingly I was comped WP about three years ago when I missed out by quite a margin due to a work change. At that time I thought this would be my one and only comp as the letter from QF states that it is a “one time benefit” or something like that. But it seems not to be the case.

I think I’ll still do the JASA though.

That's a nice routing / points / sc option there markis10, very very tempting.
