Flying to London on Q

A380 without doubt. I was to fly BNE-SIN on Monday, the day of no strike. I deliberately booked a flight via SYD to get on the A380. The quietness alone is worth it.

The morning before the flight I received a call from QF desperately trying to entice me to travel BNE-SIN direct. No way.

As it was, the A380 seemed to be a little over half full. I was flying in Y and it was easy to claim as much real estate as I could.

The OP doesn't state their status.

Without status it won't be possible to pre-book your seat on BA unless you fork out $$$. I'm also not a great fan of the 777 "flying dorm" J section. UD on BA747 might not be possible at T-24.

Without a doubt, QF Y+ is far superior to BA Y+ ... even on the 747 it is a very nice product.

Can't say I've noticed the "pressurisation" difference on the A380 - I still have issues sleeping in Y regardless of the metal.

On a flight of that length I would definitely grab some sort of premium seat.

With only a 31" seat pitch (Y), it makes paying for an exit row worthwhile.

A380. Last year we flew to USA on the A380 PE and we arrived into Boston (on a normal flight) barely jetlagged. Same on the return journey. And we also flew on the A380 that blew its engine - just the week before the incident. We were lucky on the routine route as many flights were cancelled because they took out some of the A380 fleet. They didn't tell people bound for Melbourne until they were about to board in LA (having flown from NY) that their flight had been cancelled! We were lucky as we were flying to Sydney. On the transit bus we heard of so many stories of people being booked in first class so desperate to get home that the flew in a packed economy class.

But next year we organised our flights to Heathrow so we could fly on the A380.

First - BA new first - more cosy than QF
Business - QF A380 then BA - still comfy, but don't always like the top to toe setup, but you get better meals than QF then QF 747 - the old angle seats are just not that comfortable
Economy - QF A380, then who cares

Hi having done thre trip well over 100 times now I would say with out a doubt A380 it is a far superior aircraft better ventilated and I always feel better. I have enjoyed First class Businbess class and economy and find it a pleasure.

Have a great time in London

I must say I prefer the food on QF in J (well any class for that matter)

Probably a poor batch then, as the other day, breakfast was cold and tasteless, (I have yet to have a good cooked breakfast except on BA) and the main meals were not that inspiring. Maybe we need a new chef, or I am getting a bit too picky these days....

Simple answer, fly SQ 380. Miles ahead of QF

Only in cabins other than whY.

I've tried whY and J and found them both to be decent enough. I think when it comes down to whY there really isn't that much of a difference... YMMV. I've always found economy to be as good as it can, for what it is.

I also found the J food on QF a little .. uninspiring.

A380 Would be my 1st choice every time.

I have only ever sat in F but I have taken a stroll through the whole aircraft.

This year I have had multiple flights on both 744 and A380 mainly between between MEL - LHR. I always sit in row 1 and I find the A380 is a lot less "confined". I mean when your bed is made up, in the 744 your feet sort of poke into the corner as you are in the nose of the aircraft. In the A380 your seat pivots toward the window and I find that a lot better. I prefer that it is quieter. I also like the electric window shades, much larger windows and the IFE screen is FAR superior.

If you are in F and wish to sit upstairs at the bar....... My tip is to tell the CSM, who will ensure you get the F drinks! Champagne is a lot better downstairs!! My son, PA and I have enjoyed a beautiful Taittinger Comtes De Champagne Blanc De Blanc AND Steak Sandwich very regularly late at night sitting up in the bar area.

A380 is a definite , followed by a 777 . Both aircraft much quieter & open . I try and avoid the 747 where possible now , especially those on QF . They are looking so tired & dated. It will be interesting to read some feedback on what people think of the QF 747-400 interior refit to A380 look & feel are like, that they are currently undertaking with their fleet. Am I correct in saying that one is already in operation from BNE>LAX ?

Just out of curiosity, what is the ground expeience like when flying A380? e.g. if there are more people checking in, does it take longer, or do they have more staff so it works out the same?

also, I was wondering both as a Nobody economy passenger and a WP/SG?

I am doing SYD SIN on the 777 then SIN LHR on the A380 (obviously for the extra SC's :D )

Hi all
I'm a newbie to this so not sure what you mean by SC. Is that status credits? If so, how does type of plane make a difference? I'm intreged!

By the way I flew A380 Syd to London via Singapore. Amazing plane. Ditto to what others have said. Got business class for $6,000 return on companion sale which from what I can see was a good price.

Hope that helps!

Hi there,

that was just reference to flying BA 777 to SIN (to not have to fly the old QF6) then QF A380 to LHR to maximise the status credits (if you break the trip over different flight numbers you get 280 for SYD-SIN-LHR instead of 240 for SYD-LHR) also this gives you fully flat beds on both segments.

A full A380 (450pax) compared to a full 3class 747 (371 pax) is not that much spread over a couple of hours of check in time. As I have never checked in in the economy line I can't help you there.

The 380 definitely the most comfortable and I suspect they are using the most motivated staff. HOWEVER, if you are trying for a points upgrade, as we often do from P/E to J for example, you have little chance on the 380, because of demand, but we always get one on the 747.
