Hi guys,
Just tonight on me and Mrs walk we were talking about how much $$ to take to Hong Kong, we are going for 8 days. First day will be in the air all day, so only have to pay for dinner. We will go to tourist places also, like Disney, Ocean Park etc.

Well how long is a piece of string!

When I travel to HK for work, I usually average spending around HK$100-300 per day, depending on where I eat dinner. But places like Disney will chew up a lot more than that!

The only A$ I take with me are what happens to be left in my wallet when I depart or what I think I am going to need as soon as I get back. I just withdraw HK$ from an ATM when I need it.

Public transport is cheap. Food can be cheap, but can also be expensive depending on where and what you eat.

My Mrs said we can take $4k AUD. Is that plenty?

You will have a very good time with that much money.

Don't take it in cash. That much cash is too risky even in a very honest country like Hong Kong. Have a little bit of AUD$ to change on arrival and buy an Octopus card and use it to pay for minor purchases and public transport. Small amounts of cash (about AUD$200) are all you will need.

Use credit cards for the rest.

In terms of actual cash, you probably won't need to carry much. Cheap eating places won't be a drain on your cash, while more expensive places almost always accept credit cards.

The current exchange rate is about 8:1, so makes for some pretty good shopping possibilities etc.

As others have said, don't take it all in cash - not safe way to travel anywhere.

If you are not wanting to use credit cards - international transaction fees, conversion fees, etc - get yourselves a 28 degrees Mastercard, or a Citibank Plus card - no fees, very close to official exhcnage rates - and can simply use them to make withdrawals from most ATMs.

Hope you enjoy Hong Kong - we love it - and will be there for a couple of nights in December.

Is this your first trip there? Where abouts r u staying?
