The number of AFFers you have met

there is no problem with disagreement, except when it gets nasty as it often seems to.

It does get a little nasty on here from time to time, no doubt about it (though I reckon AFF is far tamer than FT in that regard, especially FT as it was a few years ago). So often though it is fuelled by passionate beliefs that are not worded as clearly as the poster would like, sometimes argued from the heart as much as from the head (not that there's anything wrong with using the heart, but that should not overrule the facts).

There is just a very small and select group of a few posters who IMHO are far more offensive with their sometimes understated, and sometimes very obvious sarcasm. It is those posts I find far more offensive (even if the posters concerned do not necessarily mean them to be) than some of the heartfelt outpourings here.

But I can support the views expressed by some posters that despite online impressions sometimes being dire, the member can be charming in person. I met one such poster a few years ago - my online expectations were of a gun-toting fascist, someone to be very wary of, instead I got a pleasant, funny and self-deprecating chap. I don't know how I would go actually meeting someone I got into an online 'war' with (and likely never will as I am unlikely to get into such, as I tend to use the forum primarily to gain and give help rather then express any strong opinions - though I do have a few).

I've met many AFFers but I cant think (OTTOMH) of one that made me take an instant dislike to them (yet :p, and I don't know about the reverse). In reality there will be some we'll never 'gel' with in any meaningful way but meeting AFFers (for me, anyway) is never as grim as one may perceive it's going to be, in fact it's usually a pleasant experience. I don't have to think everyone is fantastic, or my new best friend (or vice-versa), but just have, at a minimum, a pleasant and cordial occasion, and at best a doozie of a time!

I was greeted by an AFFer once with a line to the effect of... "Lawlass? Oh yeah, I've got you blocked because I think you're a wanker."

I could say the same thing to 3 AFFers should I have the misfortune of bumping into them......lol

I'm pretty sure I was even more blunt than that, up to and including naming the exact thread and post number which consigned you to said black hole :P

Sent using my Roman era abacus.

Better than having 'em sitting on the fence I guess!

Eh, apparently my in-person wit and charm won 'em over, because I received a Facebook friend request shortly after

OT: I've met quite a few AFFers - mostly at either FLounge runs or Melbourne drinks, but I catch up with some of them regularly and independent of AFF now. I wouldn't even begin to attempt to name names/numbers/handles.

It has been interesting to find a few with one degree of separation (ie discovering they are friends of non-AFF friends).

Um, no. You sputtered and stammered and claimed all the way through the event, the TR and since to be fuzzy on the details. :P

My total stands at 84, first I went through the off topic thread click on the number of posts which then ranks all the members by number of posts, that got me to 72, then I checked to see who haven't posted in the off topic thread and ended up with 84.

We have had a few AFF Brisbane drinks night with one topping 18 members so a good turn out.

7 years on AFF I guess there is a good chance to meet a few people, I just met 2 in the QF/BA First lounge on Tuesday night.

An interesting list is how many AFF members have you met while overseas, and that list stands at 12, or how many AFF members phone numbers do you have, over 30.

18 AFFers for me and hopefully more at the upcoming Christmas Drinks in MEL :) 15 at the QFF Lunch, the delightful dr and mrsdrron at the SYD J Lounge, and didn't quite meet, but did see Straitman at the HSW ( too shy to introduce myself :o )

As I have attended both the Brisbane AFF Drinks, and the Melbourne XMAS drinks my total is now, um, like 90

And most importantly, I have met Princess Fiona. :D

I tried to count how many AFF members I have met but lost count.

The sad part about meeting Princess Fiona is finding out that she is a Smurf rather than an Ogre :!:

I think I've met about 15ish. If you ask me to name them all, I'd have no chance.

I know I've said it before, I'll never forget sitting on the other side of the table and seeing your facial reaction to that. Has to be one of my most memorable AFF moments of all time.

I think my total is 6... I could attempt to name them but there is a high chance I would get it wrong

I've no idea how many I've met.

Been to three events, the BNE drinks nite at the DJ Lounge (I think there were 18 there, but didn't get to meet them all), SamH004's BBQ and the DJ appreciation run. Could probably try to count everyone, but I'd stuff it up anyway, so let's just say 20-30.......maybe. Oh and did meet up with a few more in SYD lounge last year as well.

I find meeting AFFers is important. Forums are very helpful (especially AFF), but the lack of personal contact and body language sometimes allows misinterpretations of a meaning to fester into resentment. Meeting people is important in cementing the fact ALL forumites are people with feelings.....not just a bland, descriptive, funny, silly, dopey or possibly uncomprehensible handle or avatar on a computer monitor.

Just the one on a MEL-SYD flight, and he's no longer a member here. I converse with a few off AFF though :)
