I'm flying on a Works fare SYD-CHC, booked via the NZ website on NZ. Since making the booking (two months ago) I've had access to online seating allocation, but, understandably, the only seats available are outside the Space+ zone. I've recently become Velocity Gold, so based on my understanding of the DJ/NZ partnership I thought I should now be able to access pre-allocated seating in the Space+ zone. The web interface wasn't allowing this, but I thought the recent status upgrade might not have "flowed" to the booking.
The Air NZ agent guide for the trans tasman alliance states that "Air New Zealand Gold Elite, Gold and Koru members and Velocity Gold need to purchase The Works on NZ operated flights to access advanced seat request into the Space+ seating zone." (Page 19)
However, I rang Air NZ, the agent at their contact centre told me that no-one of any Airpoints status would have access to pre-seating in the Space+ zone without a Works Deluxe fare, and also that Velocity status was irrelevant on an Air NZ flight. I asked her to check that my Velocity number was applied correctly to the booking (I can't seem to confirm this via NZ's web booking management portal) but she demurred said, "all those seats are full anyway, so it won't matter".
Did I just have a poorly trained phone agent, or does the NZ travel agency guide not imply what I think it implies? I know it's not impossible, but it seems unlikely to me that all space+ seats have been allocated on a flight that's eight weeks away. Have any other DJ Gold / Plats tried for preallocation into Space+? If nothing else I'd at least like to confirm my Velocity status is on the booking.
