The journey is just a way to make my work more interesting - I get bored going to the same office daily and would rather fly to HKG than drive to Penrith.

I am at a lucky stage of FFing in that I fly enough to still be somewhat excited but not so much that it is a chore (apart from SYD-MEL-SYD that I am increasingly bored of and am doing more of).

Precisely the same situation I am currently in. And I do also agree that the latter is not really nice any more after a while. Try SYD-BNE-MEL-BNE-SYD in one day :shock::shock::shock:

I'm not very fond of SYD-PER-SYD same day in Y. Only had the displeasure of flying it twice and certainly won't be putting my hand up for the next!

My best effort was in March 2010, which for me really knocked the concept of glamour on it's head.

A work trip, had planned only a 1~2 day stopover in each place, in 14 days.


ADL-SYD-SFO-CLE.
Got to SFO, but my luggage didn't. It finally arrived in CLE 2 days later @ 10:30pm. I was due to dpt CLE for ORD the following day.
Got to CLE airport and due to bad weather my flight was cancelled for the next 2 days.

CLE-ORD-LHR-HKG, then CAN by bus and train as no flights available.
2 day meeting reduced to 1/2 day as flying out to SIN at 7am next morning.

CAN-HKG-SIN.
1 day meeting in SIN. 7am flight to GOI the next day.

SIN-BLR-GOI.
2 day meeting.

GOI-BOM-SIN-ADL.
Home .

14 days, 13 flights, 30,495 miles, delayed luggage, and 2 days of cancelled flights.

Now that's glamourous!

Glamour hmmmmm!!! Has long gone but sitting in the jlounge when your flight flight has been delayed now for an hour and a half certainly makes it some what more bearable than sitting at the gate.

No to glamour but even the 0525 PER-PBO has an element of enjoyment as it allows me to watch a few episodes of a fave TV show. Not something that is easily achieved at home!

Full glamour tonight SYD-ADL, packed aircraft, somehow jagged 4F at the last minute, op-ups I think. Long lunch follow up to SYD drinks last night, humid day in Sydney. Needless to say I was uncomfortable at the airport and not very rosy. Got on board to find a large-ish person in 4E who, as it turns out , wasn't smelling very rosy either*. Glamour!



* they were however a wonderfully polite and considerate seat buddy

Jetting around for work is generally exciting (and I agree "glamorous" is probably best reserved for limousine to private jet on a trip to south of France kind of travel) for young people without family obligations and commitments. (I use "young" in a business/work context to mean roughly less than mid-thirties, since if you're late 20s / early 30s and a professional sports person or model, then you're probably in the veteran category).

Sadly for most people, at that age you're probably slogging away in the office and by the time you are senior enough to travel for business, your lifestyle no longer appreciates the constant travelling (due to family or other commitments).

Another example of how sometimes life seems to have the order of things totally wrong.

Turning left on entering a plane or going upstairs can be nice and chatting with top 100 CEOs can be really interesting.
But glamour......Nup!

I concur with lots of posters above.
It sure as heck is not Glamorous, the hundreds of MEL/SYD/MEL's in whY on planes which have more cracks than a plumbers convention can testify to that.

However the interesting things we see, the interesting things that happen, and the very interesting people we meet make it a lot of fun.
Not to mention that I'm going to places that I would never have dreamed of going to.
The thing that does help, is when you are up the status tree and you fly a lot, things do go wrong and when they do you get looked after.

And lastly which I think appeals to a lot of folks here, there is the "thrill of the rort" by maximising our benefits for the least amount of cost/effort involved.

It was considered glamorous as only the most wealthy of people used to be able to afford to fly. When an average return ticket price was close to a full years wages for the average person, it really was the domain of the very rich.

Even now, certain types of flights are still considered in the domain of the relatively well off. Eg long haul international flights on a full service carrier is still very much considered middle class or better. Whilst the poorest of people might be able to find $20 for a JQ SYD-MEL vv special, they would have a great deal of difficulty laying out thousands for a SYD-LAX vv on QF even in Y.

Thus if you where one of those less well off people who could not afford a SYD-LAX vv flight, it would still be considered glamorous to you.

I love the comfort,the champers,the French wines......in business and first class
We are in Los Angeles at the moment and we have film directors and actors in our building.
The only thing I thought of with the glamour idea was when everyone was staring at the Bugatti parked in the handicapped slot.
Now that got drooled on so I guess that must be the start of glamour.
i choose happy over glamour any time.

One of my business friends started a manufacturing business so he regularly flies AA in First Class to Nashville on the direct flight from Los Angeles. He finds himself seated with some real Nashville musician greats and so I saw that as glamorous. He mentioned Glen Campbell and several others.
With 6.5 million AA points my friend is enjoying American Airlines to the max as he is a credit card fiend!

I know it provoked a lot of responses - many uneducated ones such as comments about excess weight taking up space...

I do around 30 domestic flights in whY per year - not as many a lot of people I know but enough. On those flights I regularly note that the overhead bins are closed before take off. This would imply to me that all the hand luggage that was brought on board has been stowed so I am not sure what the problem is. Occasionally I see a bag going to the front or rear of the cabin.

I see a lot of complaining but not much actual issue. I also constant comments about someone's delicate bag being at risk of being damaged by someone else's bag - there is no guidance on the material that can be used for hand luggage.

It's not my "delicate" bag I'm worried about, it's the valuable, delicate items inside the bag. 3 weeks back in the air this year and I've had 2 people want to jam their cough into too small a space, on top of my carry on; and one person who did ram his bag into mine and then wonder why his bag was half hanging out of the locker. Basic lack of respect.

I tend to think that this glamour idea is still kicking around. Im only in my 20s so I dont really know about flying in the 60's or the 70's personally. Or the 80s.

What I remember is the 'old' (early 90s) days of Ansett/QF when even a ticket to Melbourne was astronomical and even flying to NZ was pretty steep. I used to remember hearing about people who flew from Melbourne to Sydney for the weekend and go "wow they're living a glamourous life".

But for me, there still a bit of glamour there. As someone who was railroaded from crummy airline to crummy airline as a kid on the cheapest fare available, now that I've done a little J travelling recently its been such a revelation. The lounges, the check in even things like 'fast track' in the UK. I noticed the looks people gave me "how the hell is that kid getting past us" and while its probably bad, i revelled in it.

While i dont have the luxury of work travel, and any travel i will do will be cargo hold economy jammed up against 2 other people i dislike immensely, when its my own coin, i felt a little bit glamorous. Especially on a flight where the FA's give you amazing service and you just think dear god, how can I ever go back to economy.
