A week or 2 ago I was looking at booking an overseas trip on QF from MEL-SIN-BOM, prices were approx 1049 return...
I went ahead to go and book yesterday and was shocked that the price has now gone up to $1648 return for Red E-deal, doesn't matter what date I look at its all minimum $1600.. (with 4 of us flying $650 extra, thats $2600 extra!!)

The routes have plenty of capacity so there is no reason for such a large increase!

Is this because the sale finished? If so how often do sales comes up?

Otherwise it looks like I will have to fly SQ @ $1000 return. Which I am not too happy about as I just purchased me and my partner QC membership and wanted to use the lounges etc. :(

No wonder Q is loosing International business because of stupidness like this, no one will pay almost $700 more for a Y flight that all other airlines can provide for much less.

There has been a fare restructure to Europe and also India and you are no doubt seeing this coupled with the extra fuel taxes as the cause of the raise!

Qantas and British Airways have implementing a JSA Economy Class Fare Restructure effective today, 01 February 2012. The following JSA routes will be affected:

• Australia to UK/Europe v.v.
• Australia to SIN/HKG/BKK v.v.
• UK/Europe to SIN/HKG/BKK v.v.

Qantas and British Airways announced changes to their operations under their Joint Services Agreement (JSA), effective 25th March 2012. Changing the JSA Economy Class Fare Structure will provide both Qantas and British Airways improved visibility on the mix of mid-haul traffic to SIN/HKG/BKK and long-haul Australia to UK/Europe v.v. traffic, allowing us to deliver consistent and optimal customer access to seats on joint services to and through those Asian hubs.

Key features of the new JSA Economy Class Structure:

• Inventory classes of S, Q and O will be dedicated to selling long-haul Australia – UK/Europe v.v. itineraries;
• Inventory classes of L, V and N will be dedicated to selling mid-haul to SIN/HKG/BKK v.v. itineraries.
• Y, B, H, K and M inventory classes will continue to be available for both long-haul and mid-haul itineraries.

Qantas services to Mumbai

Qantas is also extending the same economy class fare structure to services between Australia and Mumbai, including through services between Australia and UK/Europe via Mumbai.

I don't quite understand what this exactly means, and why they would do it?

But it is quite rediculous, considering they're already struggling in the sub-continent market, with other carriers providing cheaper and more frequent services!

Oh well thanks for nothing QF and hello SQ......

Don’t forget you can credit the SQ flights to Velocity. Not helpful for your QP membership, but better than nothing.

Always best to check the end date of a sale and book before it.

Even without a Sale this route use to be no more than $1200-1300 return, but now almost $1700 overnight! :(

Don't forget that you need to book on a fare type of Flexi Saver or higher on SQ to earn any points (viz. 1 Velocity point per mile and Full Economy status credits).

From last random check, there are some fares r/t Mumbai on SQ Flexi Saver for about $1400-$1500 which books into class W.

Other than that, $1000 r/t isn't bad at all even with no points or status. If you are a Virgin elite, you can still use SQ lounges even on a non-earning fare.

Looks like the increase only affects x-AU... ex-SIN, they have extended their Y sale... $868 SGD (650 AUD) SIN-SYD/BNE/MEL, travel period now - end of Aug.
