Hi folks

During a discussion today Royal Brunei was mentioned as having good J class fares to Europe which a friend is looking at. I seem to recall that they do not serve alcahol. Would I be correct or incorrect.

Thank you:)

They don't provide any but I think I've read that they will serve you your own alcohol, but you'd want to have that confirmed, as I'm by no means sure of it.

I have heard the same thing. You can BYO. Ask them. And let us know the result.

I flew Royal Brunei in May 2011 and yes, its a dry flight and yes, you can take your own. The issue is where you can get the booze, for example, I purchased three bottles (300ml I think) at BNE airport of various spirits. As each bottle was for a different leg BNE -> BRU -> DXB -> LHR I needed to have each bottle in its own duty free security bag and each bag had to have a copy of the receipt attached. BNE duty free knew exactly what to do. As you cannot take more than 100ml of liquid on a flight unless you have purchased it from duty free, you cannot buy say 1000ml bottle of Vodka at origin and expect to be able to drink it on all segments.

My advice, either follow what I did by buying as many small bottles as segments and speak to the duty free staff so they properly package the bottles or buy a small bottle at each airport in the duty free shop.

I’ve heard that too, about buying some duty free and them providing the mixers. I think it’s also been noted that you should buy two bottles, as you wont be able to keep the unsealed first bottle at the mid-way point, but if it’s still sealed you can take it back onboard for the next flight onward.

[-]Or did I dream all that?[/-]

Edit: See post #5, I’m slow at typing!

Looks like I would never fly Royal Brunei,I like a few scotch's to help me sleep on overnight flights.

Fine for spirits but what about wine? You don't get 100mL bottles of shiraz afaik :)

They sell 750ml at duty free at most locations that should get you through...

Well I have a 187ml souvenir from the Rockhampton QP, but the idea is that you only need it to be 100ml if you’re bringing it from home. If you buy it at the airport you might even get away with a mini-keg of Heineken!

All in all I am sure Brunei is a very unsatisfying experience on the alcohol score

Haha, it's late, I've been traveling, but for a moment there I thought shiraz Afaik was a firebrand middle eastern
label I hadn't tried yet

Flew them in the mid-nineties BNE/xDRW/xBWN/RGN but for me the funniest thing was the inflight announcement about not using electronic devices....."because it might change the plane".

Also amusing was the expression on the faces of other pax most of whom were travelling through to Europe, when we disembarked in Yangon in the middle of the night that kind of said "you're getting off here, are you nuts"?

I never would have imagined waiting for my bag to come off the carousel in customs and listening to "Like a Prayer" by Madonna & "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley.

A little off topic but can you pour your own drink and then just get the soft drink off them.

Would be great if they did that on Jetstar as I could see people walking on with Carton's on their shoulders.

Take care when booking with Royal Brunei.

They have a habit of changing flight times and even dates. And worse still, cancelling destinations after bookings have been made and paid in full.

Whether the airline is dry or not is insignificant compared to your flight disappearing after all other arrangements are in place.

Yes, this is exactly what I did, I had a small bottle of Bundy and I kept asking the stewardess for a can or two of coke. They knew what it was for, I didn't hide the fact I was mixing and drinking, but I didn't make a big deal of it either, <shrug>.

I've fallen for the "can I have some ice with that" before when handing out soft drinks multiplied by the number of pax onboard which I thought was strange at the time as normally several people just want the can of coke only & won't bother with the ice. Lo and behold a bottle of Jameson Whiskey materialised out of nowhere shortly thereafter.

It wasn't until after the event I found out that 'deployment' wasn't over until they touched down in DRW.
