Singapore Hotel Suggestions?

We're looking to do a family holiday in Singas later this year, just after the GP. Deciding on a hotel is proving to be a bit difficult, as we usually just look for a hotel with clean sheets and a place to sleep at night. This holiday will be a bit different as it'll be 10 days in the one hotel with potential to stay in a few times. The group is us (2+2) and my brother in law and his wife.

A 4 to 5 star hotel is about the right level, with some decent in house amenities - nice tropical pool for the kids with a comfortable area for adults, comfortable rooms, a few in house dining options. One issue, dress on the casual side of smart casual would be preferable. My brother in law works at a mine, not FIFO, and doesn't have 3 piece suits or anything like that (neither do I for that matter).

Anyway, searching so far is pointing towards:
  • Swissotel The Stamford
  • The Fairmont (but we'd have to take 2x3 person rooms instead of a 4 and a 2, so kinda illegal)
  • The York hotel
  • Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard
  • Rendezvous Grand
We also thought the Intercontinental looks ok, but it is a bit expensive via Qantas holidays. I checked direct with Priority Club and it looks cheaper but there seems to be a number of extra taxes. More research required.

I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with those hotels. But mainly if there are any other suggestions for hotels to suit?

I have stayed at those listed as well as thirty others as part of my previous fortnightly SIN commute, the Rendevouz is usually great value and overlooked by many, I find the IHG properties underwhelming while the Stamford is nice, the Stamford Crest is my favorite (penthouse suites on top of the Stamford). For a family the Rendevouz would be best, its close to shopping and transport.

I have stayed at the Swissotel Stamford a few times. I quite like it and would recommend it. Has good location. You can walk through the Raffles City shopping mall at the ground floor to the MRT station.

The rooms are starting to show their age, but still in good condition. I had heard that some floors have been refurbished, not sure if this is true or not. As I always seem to get older rooms. Have been given a free room upgrade a few times. Hotel staff are pretty good.

It has quite a big swimming pool, although I have never used it.

You see quite a few airline crews staying there (including Qantas), which to me usually is a sign the hotel is good value.

You can credit the stay to Qantas FF (I think it earns 1000 FF points per night or at least it use to) and I assume you can also credit it to other schemes as well.

For the pool factor alone - Marina Bay Sands... the kids will love it.

Also worth checking out some of the Sentosa resorts - maybe split the trip between Singapore CBD and Sentosa.

I've stayed at the Swissotel Stamford and the Rendezvous. I've found the Rendezvous to be very good value, and in a great location, near the Bugis MRT and at the start of Orchard Road. One thing I do like about the Swissotel though is that even though the rooms are a bit older, they are quite large by Singapore standards, which is always nice. Rooms in Singapore are quite small usually.
Maybe also have a look at the Grand Park City Hall. They sometimes have a rate going that includes breakfast, 4pm check out and an automatic room upgrade if available. It's quite good value, especially if you have an afternoon or evening flight. It's also in a great location, just across from the Swissotel Stamford.

Swisshotel is a good reliable bet. The pool isn't flash but is big and has a kid friendly shallow end- and they do a great poolside breakfast. As another poster pointed out the location is great for access to everywhere. You can walk to Clarke and Boat Quay's and there's a relatively new eating village in the block behind. The food court underneath in the mall is also fantastic for cheap but authentic and really tasty food of every variety.

I love the Shangri-La for its food and fit-out. You can often get a very good rate as well. Location isn't that great though.

I would avoid the Marina Bay Sands. Yes, the pool is spectacular, but it really costs - even as a guest. The rest of the hotel is a zoo. Too big by far.

The park hotel at clarke quauy was pretty good for us. If you can get on the club floor you get free coughtains 5-7PM each night.

have had a 2 bedroom apartment at Somersett Apartments Clarke Quay andthey were fine, had everything, do you own breakfasts though. they are terrible in the dining room
Novatel Clarke Quay fantastic. they share the same pool at the Somersett above. Breakfast much better.

Clarke Quay great for getting around to. walking distance of lots of things/ cheap taxi's otherwise.

You might want to mix things around a bit, if inclined to or its' not too much bother, and try 2 or 3 different hotels. Marina Bay Sands, is worthwhile for the pool alone (as the rooms do not impress), but can be very expensive, so something I'd suggest for a night or two if budget is a constraint. Any of above are OK, and I'd add that The Parkroyal on Beach Road has quite a nice pool area, but only watch out is a fair bit of construction around there. Reviews seem OK for the hotel though. Lastly - if you want to get away from it all for a day or two there's local (Changi Village Hotel) which is in quieter more local area (main thing to do is eating of course, and boatride to nearby island - Pulau Ubin, where people generally hire bikes for a few hours and ride around) , certainly on the casual side of smart casual is absolutely no problem there.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Certainly gives a bit of focus for us. Really great. Novotel looks good and we are looking into Marina Bay Sands and/or Sentosa for a 2 or 3 hotel visit. Does it really cost to use the pool at the Marina Bay Sands?

We've still at 6 hotels as options, including the novotel, swissotel, Shangri-la and rendezvous. One of the suggestions looked great, can't remember which one, with a club level and all that, but the fine print said no kids in the club lounge after 5 pm.

That serviced apartment website is a bit clunky, but great suggestion as well and we're looked at the various properties.

cheers

You could check out the Conrad where I have stayed a couple of times (pricey but very nice, they are good to HH Diamonds and Golds, best Exec lounge I've seen - not that I've seen many), or perhaps the Royal Plaza on Scotts (where I have not yet stayed), where I am staying for a reunion in April. Has free internet, free minibar (but limited to a couple of beers and some drinks daily) and exec lounge. Also excellently located at the corner of Scotts Road and Orchard Road.

Can't speak for the pools at either I'm afraid, have not used them.

I would not be to worried about club lounges in SIN, you can eat better and drink better at any hawker centre for a lot less than the room upgrade cost in many cases!

Does it really cost to use the pool at the Marina Bay Sands?

I stayed there last year - pool and sky park access was included with the room rate. On the top floor there is one area that is for guests only this is where the infinity pool is, also there are some smaller spa pools in the same area. Depending on how you enter you may have to show your room card to an attendant.

There is one section of the SkyPark with viewing decks, bars and restaurants that is open to the public as well as hotel guests. Public have to pay while it is free for hotel guests.

MBS pool is definitely free for guests (in fact non guests cant get into the pool area although can view it), along with the super impressive gym just below.

Their Exec package can also be well worth while for a couple (maybe less so unless the kids can play by themselves in the pool)
2hr cakes and afternoon tea, followed by a 1.5hr drinks and canapes (when I was there they had MBS branded Mumm champagne) all in a little pavillion overlooking the pool

A smaller hotel with real class is the Fullerton Bay Hotel , ( not the Fullerton Hotel which is the big Hotel / landmark next to it ) .
This place ticks all your boxes and the rooftop pool , bar and restaraunt with its views over Clark Quay are amazing .
The Saturday Brunch is pretty special as well ....... and it doesnt clash with Sunday Champagne lunch at Raffles !!!

I like the Quincy. The pool is fantastic. About 3 mins walk to orchard rd. They include 3 buffet meals and limo airport transfers.

I visited the MBS rooftop for a drink on my list trip and while the view is awesome and the pool impressive unless you want to feel like the proverbial goldfish in the bowl with everyone gawking at you I don't think that staying there and trying to "enjoy" the amenities would be easy. Its a zoo.

Cheers

Medhead the shangri la is absolutely superb. Club level fantastic; they printed out letters from Spongebob for my then 5 year old son, views, everything amazing. Tropical pool ridiculous over the top treatment from attendants bringing fruit, cool towels, etc. I doubt they care what you wear, i havent worn a suit for years but the tailor in the basement is OK. Big rooms available. Price might be high but value is there. Probably the best big hotel I have stayed at (I prefer small boutique places ideally but enjoyed this immensely).

Location is not so close to Orchid rd but I felt no need to be right there. In fact I walked to the shops but it is a bit of a hike.
