Carry on bag recommendations?

I know there are other threads on this topic, but the market does change quite a bit each year with the introduction of new styles.

Any recommendations at the moment? 105 or 115cm cabin bag is what i am after. Obviously lighter is better, two wheels not four, and i will probably end up buying from Myer based on time constraints and a raft of discounts there this week for Myer One members.

The new super light hardshell antlers look interesting but not practical, samsonite now has superlight bag series too but 4 wheels. I will probably end up with antler in the end though.

Oh and an expandable zip and front pocket are also desirable.

The luggage wharehouse at west end will often beat Myer on pricing when Myer are on sale and they have a good Antler selection, I am very happy with my Antler translite.

What is the reason for your 2 wheel preference? Is it the extra wheels sticking out?

Firstly the additional wheels. Makes overhead storage a touch difficult at times and imho is wasted weight. Also i have never been sold on 4 wheels. The human body is not designed to handle 4 wheels well and i laugh at people pushing their bags around the city or airport on 4 wheels and having a myriad of issues.

I have the four wheeled Samsonite carry on and I must say it can be a bit hard getting it in the overhead on the UD of a 747 but generally ok. The thing I like most about it is that I can wheel it next to me when queuing for check in and boarding. But I have seen some interesting sights of people doing very funny stuff trying to push theirs instead of pulling them.

I'm with you on the 4 wheels Mal.

I was never sold on a roller - found I much preferred my leather duffle bag, but a weekly Melb gig last year where I needed a suit, coat etc plus my briefcase meant I needed to look at rollers. I ended up with the Victorinox WT-20 (112cm). Built-in suiter, clever design, very well-made. $580ish retail but easy enough to find for ~$270 (search on AFF never works for me, but I've posted a link in the past).

If its a holiday and I only have one carry-on, I always take a hold-all or leather duffle, but if it's for work and I need my briefcase, then my roller (never had an issue with 2 bags even though it's 112cm).

I'm looking at new luggage for our trip In July, my 15 year old Samsonites is trashed (the wheels started coming apart) and my wife's is too small.
So I'm watching this thread with much interest.

What specials for Myer One customers? They had a lot of 40% off up till the first (which brought them within a few dollars of the cheapest online I could find). But at the moment they only have 35% off some of the Samsonite range. I've been keeping an eye out ay Myer. Was this a mail out special?

On the subject of 4 vs 2 wheels, does any one have comments on this? My older bags are natuarally 2 wheelers. I can see an advantage of a 4 wheeler being easy to move in, say, a check in line, but do they roll away due to no braking?

For leisure I use a LV keepall 55 ( not very practical for business trips).I also have a Cosmolite carry-on and very happy with it. Bit like the Tardis and the elastic straps and mesh compartment make packing easy. No issues with the 4 wheels and easy to manouevre at check in, boarding etc. Would not hesitate to say that of the conventional roller-boards this is the best one I have owned.

I love my Antler carry-on .. perfect size for the smaller overhead bins on shorthaul flights. If I was buying again though, I think I'd buy a Crumpler "Dry Red" carry on - functional, looks good and has gotten some pretty good reviews here on AFF.

With Airlines becoming stricter on weight limitations the most important factor in choosing a carry on is size and weight - remember a carry on of 4 or 5kg is not
much good if you prefer to not use the "check in" facility. Perhaps the best option could be a cheap polyester duffle style bag - no wheels etc = no weight.
Of course you can cheat a bit with your personal items eg handbags, briefcase etc. However as time goes on weight/size will become a big problem as airlines see luggage
as income.
I do have a friend who only uses plastic garbage bags for carry on carry on so he gets 7kg of "stuff" inside. - hope it does not come to this for all of us !

Had the same bag as you iirc. Mine snapped at the handle join hence replacement required. Was a good bag but i really, really gave it a lot of abuse.

I ended up getting a new bag using the Myer sale. Stuck with antler alto went for a 115cm bag instead of a 105.

I use Antler Aeon Air - I now have virtually the full set. Good compromise of price, durability, weight and carrying capacity.

Pick up from strand bags on sale at about $130, there's two sizeS for carryon - I have the larger and it fits in old style 738 bins on QF/DJ wheels first just nicely)

I've got one of these High Sierra Elevate ones:
High Sierra Sport Company
and I've found it great. The front has a zipper expansion to give you a bit more room if you need it on the return trip, it has solid wheels and all the High Sierra stuff is pretty durable.

Not sure it's your style Mal, but I love my Crumpler Dry Red #3 - discussed in more detail in this thread. I'm also inclined not to go with a four-wheeled roller (like the #10, though I'm not averse to them on checked baggage), so the two inset wheels on the #3 are just right and ideal for overhead storage.

It's not Tumi, but it is relatively light and very durable. That Myer One voucher has a 15% off deal for Crumpler, but they are regularly discounted up to 40% off during Myer's cyclical sales, at which time they are very reasonably priced.
