Thinking of going Sydney To London. Unfortunately no other choice but to go economy.

I was thinking hard about this and the fact I hate sitting for long periods, probably going to be way worse in economy. So I got to thinking about standing up and walking around a bit.

I know the aisles in the planes are a bit narrow. What is the protocol for walking around and say on the A380 in economy are there places to stay on your feet for say 20 minutes ?

Obviously I dont want to disturb anybody and maybe walking up and down the aisles might not be a good look and could disturb others. So maybe right down the back ????

I flew premium economy on the a380 last year and there was a large self service bar area near the stairs which I used for regular walks, stretches etc - I was 3m pregnant at the time and struggling a bit. Not sure what protocol is, but no one seemed bothered by me being there and it was a great space :)

I dont see why it would be a problem at all. When my kid was little I walked him up and down all the way to hong kong or stood in the emergency exit area, I guess everyone preferred that to his screaming which was the alternative.

Maybe break up the trip even with a stay in an airport hotel for a sleep

The areas at the back of each aisle seem to have space to stand. I usually use an area like that for calf stretches.

Thats right I think I read that somewhere.

Yes Albatross, thats kind of what I need to stretch my legs because the get kinda sore. Funny problem I have is the need to crack my ankles and knees (dont ask). So yeah an area at the end of the aisles might be OK.

I know when my wife flew to London 2010 in economy she said that blokes congregated toward the back chatting. That was on a 747, I assume the A380 might be the same or a bit roomier ???

Also even though I need to fly economy, at 5'9, I think from what I have read the economy section of the Qantas A380 is acceptable if not terriffic.

Yeah the back of the A380 is a great space. Especially when people are sleeping and there are not many people about. Plus you can get a beverage and a snack from the self service area. Also you can do lot of different stretches without fear of getting in someones way.

Airlines are always encourage passengers to walk about the cabin to minimise the risk of dvt.

I always walk around numerous times on a long haul flight. I walk as far as I can, turn around & repeat a couple of times. Then hang around at the back for some stretches. I always drink hepa of water so that I'm hydrated, as well as needing to get up "to stretch my legs" ;)

On the A380 in economy, look for the foot net under the seat in front, & treat it like a foot hammock rather than a footrest. Ie stick your feet into it, not on the bar. I'm 5'11" & can turn onto my side, & really get quite comfortable with the seat reclined plus feet in the hammock. It feels almost like I'm lying down.

Works for me.

Thanks nice tips. So 5'11 and you manage OK, gives me some encouragement. Cheers

Highly recommend you pay for an exit row. It will make the journey a bit more bearable.

Thats a thought, these are like gold though and arent there some special requirements ?

Willing and able to assist in an emergency.

Personally I don't value an exit row that highly on long flights. As a tall person I find it uncomfortable at times.

Can you elaborate? I'm tall also and apart from a similar seat (such as 80A/K) I'd be lost travelling without an exit row in Y.

QF will allow you to purchase exit row seats.

Flying LAX - BNE the wife and I had exit row seats which were great (for me) due to the leg room. The downside was i'd recently broken a big toe & 3 people stepped on it when they were stretching during the flight :-|

The SingAIr A380s have Economy down the bottom back and also at the top, so both are accessible by the rear stairs. Makes a good round trip it's probably a couple of 100 metre walk. From your seat down to the back up or down the stairs, around the top cabin and back to your seat.

No issues with walking around or standing AFAIK, apart from crossing curtained off areas (or congregating around Lavatories in the case of the flights to and in the LOTFAP)

Plenty of space to walk around on an 747 or A380. Just be careful not to bump the people that have spilled over into the aisles. There are also a few areas where you stand for ~20 minutes. Just pretend you are waiting to use the toilets.

As a shorter person with extra width I love exit rows as it means no one can recline into my lap for the duration of the flight. Shame you have to pay for the privilege now....
