Given my impression that 'High Street' prices are pretty good for spirits in the US, is it worth purchasing DF, either at MEL or LAX?

There's some comment in the JW thread, but excise is not as steep in the USA as it is in Oz.

One of the main reasons I buy duty free ex USA is that I travel HLO, so can't check store purchased items.

The base price of alcohol is cheaper in the states - especially for what we would consider 'premium' brands here. But it depends on which state you will be in as to how much state tax you get hit with (I believe its quite high in CA and NY for example, but it is ow in states like KY)

Personally don't bother with duty free, I just buy stuff at the shop. I think I bought on my last trip a 2 litre Jack Daniels bottle for less than $40 on special in suburban shop in LA.

Agree with others. The prices I saw in CA and NY were so cheap that I definitely wouldn't bother buying DF, particularly in Australia.

For hand luggage only buffs duty free is the only option.
Those who want to carry the "kitchen sink" go and get 2.25 litres (each person) of the best you want from a liquor trader who has your brand on special. Often specials can be "loss leaders".
Make sure you pack the purchase well.
