Safe use of public WiFi Internet access

Digging up an old thread.

I'm interested in using a VPN when in public WiFi areas, anyone have any recommendations?

As a side note, l found Cocoon, a Firefox extension.

I still use (the free version) proXPN at times. Works well. Wanted a UK based IP address, so have also used another product at times (It basically makes me look like I'm in the UK).

Cocoon has some features above and beyond for use for secure browsing with Firefox, but I see the additional features as being for the privacy nuts. It's not something I'd generally use in addition to a vpn - but depending on what your requirements are it could come in handy. (Note cocoon won't protect other programs like Outlook / Live Mail / Messenger etc traffic)

I'm a user of Witopia - the main reason being I like to flip back and forth between US, UK and Australian IPs both in Australia and when overseas.

So how is it working?

I am looking at using a VPN and wondering what product people recommend.
