Hi all,,
Looking at booking an RTW for our 20th in October, and I'm having trouble trying to figure out how I can go from Melbourne to one of the Pacific islands on the way to LAX. I have done an itinerary on the qantas web site that says that I have returned to my destination and used 16/16 allowances. But when I download a pdf of the itinerary, it says that I have used 15 coupons.
Any thoughts??

David

Somewhat difficult if you don't post your itinerary.
May well have to do with land segments, which aren't flights but count as segments as they are ticketed as a non-flying segment.

Often occur in New York where there are three different airports.

Pacific islands are often a pain in the backside to get to because of special rules and lack of OW metals flying there. If you've a spare segment and your North America segments aren't all fully utilised, I'd use it there, especially if you're doing a DONE.

You may also benefit by checking out the Global Explorer, rather than Oneworld Explorer, fares.

xGLOBx's allow for itineraries including carriers outside the OW bloc.

Go to the oneworld website and use the trip planning tool on there.

I don't think there are many OZ-Pacific Island-LAX routes operated... by anyone..

... NZ via AKL/PPT? Jetstar/TN via AKL/PPT.... Jetstar/AA via HNL?

From SYD there is also FJ via NAN and Hawaiian via HNL...

Not many Oneworld (or island) options!

I think most folks tend to go - OZ or NZ/Island of choice/OZ or NZ/LAX

thanks for the suggestions all,,
the itinerary at this stage looks like this,,
mel-lax-las-dfw-yyz-jfk-lhr-fra--fra-sin-hkg-itm-nrt-syd-mel..
stop overs 10/
coupons 15/16
sector 7 is land transportation, from Paris to Frankfurt.
It would be nice to figure out how to get say Honolulu in without losing 1 of the other cities.

Get on a cheap return LAX-LAS if you want and drop one of the cities off this ticket (or drive one way - the drive is great), same could be said for your SIN to HKG (but the US one would be cheaper) - use the long haul on the RTW ticket and try and take out the short hops.

Lax is just a transit at this stage unless the daughter is living in us.
At this stage will have a look at the syd option,

Sent from my MZ601 using AustFreqFly

Purchase ex-SYD and get cheap MEL-SYD-MEL to add on. Then do SYD-HNL-LAS.

Presume you're playing with the Oneworld planner (just a reminder it's there and easy to use if you're not already).

We need new terminology now the planes are plastic!

One World Alliance does restrict your Pacific Island options a bit. We recently flew LAN Sydney - Auckland - Papeete - Easter Island - Santiago to start our 10 weeks in South America.
A trip a few years ago we flew Air NZ: Sydney - Auckland - Tonga - Samoa - Los Angeles - Cook Islands - Sydney. Researching for that trip the other option we looked at was Sydney - Nadi - Los Angeles - Sydney.

yes, I was using the one world planner and have managed to nail it.

syd-hnl-lax-las-dfw-yyz-lga-jfk-lhr-cdg-fra-sin-hkg-kix-itm-nrt-syd

might just play around with some of the connections and see if I can pick up some other stops along the way. cheap mel-syd-mel and we'll be on our way.

thanks all for your suggestions..

The oneworld planner seems to indicate no flights between YYZ and NYC (any airport). Are you sure you're able to find a flight?

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but I was wondering if anyone knew offhand what the cheapest place in Europe or Asia was to start a DONEx from ? It's a bit painful to check now the @*&#$^*&@^#ers insist you spec up a whole itinerary to quote.

the planner says that there is a flight between yyz and nyc via lga. if my memory serves me correctly i think it's operated by american eagle for aa.
the planner says that all flights are available, and considering it's in j or f for 2 people at 27 odd k, I think that it's a nice anniversary present. especially when you consider I would've gotten less for murder...:)

Khartoum, Sudan. Easier to get to from Australia and arguable safer (albeit possibly only marginally) is Johannesburg.

Hmmm. Okay. Good to know. As long as the booking engine takes the fare then, you're right, it's all good.

I'll actually already be in Europe - I have about half a trip organised and am looking at the best way to get home.

Anywhere else that maybe strikes a better balance between budget and safety ? :)

This excellent resource created by a Flyertalk member will help. (Note no oneworld carrier flies to the Seychelles, ruling it out of competition for the cheapest fare.)
