Hi, Used Heathrow at the end of March, and it was a a disgrace. Total confusion, few if any staff to speak of. But what are the answers, UK regional airport, or European airports. Like Paris, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam, will the problems still exist.
This has all the makings of a total Olympic sized disaster.
What is everybodies ideas on this to get around the problem.

Which terminal were you using? I arrived in at T5 only a few hours ago and it was smooth, well signed, and had ample staff speaking multiple languages assisting and guiding people.

The thing I hate about LHR so much is the queues. We were over 30 minutes late as we were doing holding patterns prior to landing; not an unusual procedure. I'm sitting under the arrivals path a few miles from the airport as I type, and every 45 seconds something noisy is flying over. Simply an insanely busy airport.

(FWIW T3 is also not bad, although the lounges are a little hidden, but that's fine!)

Traversed LHR T3 on Good Friday morning (from QF1) and the wait to pass through immigration was about 30-40 minutes (using the fast track lane). Apart from that, I encountered no other issues with the airport.

For a comparison, I had a 30 minute wait for immigration at JFK T7 a week later.

Landed at LHR T3 a week and a half ago and was showered (AA arrivals lounge) and in my rental car 45 mins after touching down.

35 mins from touching down at T4 in March 2012, and 40 mins at T3 in Feb 2012. (Including shower)

I'm due a "holding pattern" delay, I haven't had a real delay for 6 or 7 visits now.

That said T5 is getting a lot of bad UK press about delays at immigration at the moment.

They must know who you are. :p

Just went through T3 Fasttrack. Was the only one at the check point (verifies you're eligible) then number 2 in security queue. very quick, efficient and the lass was exceedingly friendly. Even the normal queue wasn't so bad.

For all its faults, LHR really only has problems (from what i've experienced) during a) strikes and b) snow. Arriving at T5 can be slow, but no slower than other big airports (and better than the 2 1/2 hours it took me to get from plane to re-check in the other day at MIA!).

My experience is similar for T3 mostly - I have no issues. I don't find the T5 F lounge as nice as SYD/HKG but it is acceptable.

The only issue I have ever had was baggage delays/losses.

It's only suffering from the same problem all other airports built in the golden age of flying, in the middle of a metropolis with nowhere to expand is. It was just never designed for the volume of traffic that's now happening around the globe. Sydney is worse, it only takes two planes to land one after the other for mayhem to ensue. For Australia to have the major entry point for international traffic look like a trussed up garden shed is fairly embarassing. But then it was only ever made for the once per year holiday traveller and the odd exec to traverse.

Who would have thought that the explosion of the internet would actually see an increase in foreign travel rather than a reduction? It's never been easier to communicate internationally, instantaneously. Go figure...

Last LHR experience early April was very quick. Arrived on QF9 and were at the gate at 6AM (strong headwinds) at T3. Breezed through and was sitting in my seat on the connecting flight to BRU at 6.30 and the flight left at 6.50. Even our bags made it!

Landed at Terminal 5 from Paris at the end of March Sunday at about 5.00pm and took an hour to go through immigration - no fast track lanes and on speaking with a customs officer ( he saw I was born there so was a bit chatty ) he said they get no support from the government !..which I took to mean they did not have enough staff, when I asked how they would cope with the Olympics he said they would probably just wave them through. It would help if they had some TV's working that you could catch up on news or even info about London and the Olympics as your standing there

I don't know about the rest of you, but every time I go through Heathrow I get to play 20 questions. If they stopped playing that game things might speed up significantly.

Our worst experience was a 3 hour wait in the arrivals hall queue, after landing on a Saturday night in July from New York. We were on economy tickets, and watched the fast trackers sail through. Simply insufficient staff for the crowd.

After 2 hours, the situation worsened with new arrivals prevented from entering the arrivals hall - and at that point, I doubt it would have mattered if you had a fast track or not.

So no economy arrivals in UK for us. Standing for 3 hours was physically very taxing.

For future UK trips, we are considering CDG with a Eurostar trip into the UK.

I agree there. The T5 Galleries F lounge is nice, and the only good thing it has over the QF lounge is better Champagne (but you'd expect that as it's so much cheaper there).

I'm shocked. I just did BOS-LHR-SIN-SYD-(in J lounge awaiting flight to MEL) and my bags made it. Not only that, they made it in the first 30 or so off the belt. BA refuse to do priority luggage for OW elites anymore (claiming it doesn't do anything but i can add the tag if you really want??). And to add to the miracle of it arriving, I had a 12 hour layover in LHR. I was fully expecting to not have bags when I arrived in SYD. That said, what's the bet they won't make it to MEL now, just to spite me :D

Border staff strike: Airport immigration staff announce one-day strike in row over pensions | Mail Online

A strike is planned by Border Security that will impact Heathrow and all ports.
The article also points out the near riot conditions in the last few weeks.
For those with happy memeories of waltzing through security in 10 mins last year (I'm one of them) be aware that the current situation is the result of industrial action to protest the so called austerity measures by the British govt and changes to pension conditions.

Luckily the times I've passed through Heathrow it hasn't been too bad. It's like arriving in almost any other international airport (except the best ones in Asia) and, unless you are a citizen, the wait time is expected.

That's not to say Heathrow is a good airport.

Transit to T5 always kicks me. The lines at T5 at the transit point are horrible and not well managed for the anticipated traffic. I am lucky that oneworld Emerald has saved me considerable time 2 times out of 2 that I've needed to transit to T5. I think that's an unofficial thing but I'll take it to cut the lines and use Priority Security. Last time I transited to T5, had I not been able to cut the lines I think I would've missed my connection (my total transit time was just under 3 hours).

I think the biggest issue with Heathrow (in fact, all the London airports except for LCY) is passage time between gate and border. Yes, there are travelators to cut the time and effort, but it still takes considerable time to get to passport control (or, for departures, from passport control). Then, there simply aren't enough counters at immigration (and ones that actually have agents behind them) to process plane loads of people which are certainly going to be coming for the Olympics. Perhaps the thought is that if everyone moves slower to the border control then the crowding at the immigration counters will be better controlled. However, that's the wrong thinking process and will only breed discontent.

The main thing that would worry me for Heathrow (or any of the other London airports) is how they will manage baggage. That's both inbound and outbound baggage. T5 didn't fare very well when it opened, and with the exception of weather events or strikes (which it hasn't dealt with rather gracefully), I have my doubts that it can handle baggage effectively at full stress load, when that is exactly what it has to be capable of doing. Add on top of that you're going to get a flood of tourists who will undoubtedly and shamelessly flout the baggage allowance rules, and on top of that you're going to get a lot of athletes and so on that probably need to carry sports equipment (i.e. special baggage).

Overall, I'd probably more scared about how central London will handle the influx of people for the Olympics. I know that our dear friends in London are definitely not looking forward to it. Perhaps it's a good time for Londoners to consider a vacation for a couple of weeks.

I'm not sure about CDG but FRA has cheaper landing fees than any airport in the UK because of the "green" loading onto the fees which I highly doubt goes anywhere except general revenue. Check it out but the price difference may go some way towards the price of your train tickets.

Man I'm glad I haven't had all of your experiences! Mine have been generally good, especially considering a plane load of people and no FastPasses... I'm glad I've never had to wait more than about 30 minutes. One thing I will say is that it is a H-U-G-E hike form gate to customs, but aside from that it's been generally good.

I wouldn't say disaster but certainly far from smooth runs on my entries into LHR (all two of them, T3 and T5). Long, slow-moving, poorly formed lines. The only place I've seen lines nearly as long is SYD but they were moving faster.

Border staff strike: Airport immigration staff announce one-day strike in row over pensions | Mail Online

A strike is planned by Border Security that will impact Heathrow and all ports.

I came across industrial action on one of my arrivals - four immigration officers to process planeloads of passengers. Getting off the aircraft quickly didn't help a jot because we had to be ferried to the terminal.

How do you get a fast track pass at Heathrow. We are silver, Qantas Club and flying QF business to LHR in 3 weeks time. Thanks for any help. Hate queues.
