British Airways parent IAG may bring a Gulf airline into the Oneworld alliance this year and considers Qatar Airways Ltd. to be a top candidate, IAG’s chief executive officer said on Wednesday.
“We’ll keep all options open but I admire what Qatar has achieved,” CEO Willie Walsh said in an interview at an industry conference in Barcelona. “The combination of what CEO Al Baker has done with the airline and what Qatar has done with the new airport at Doha makes it very interesting.”

The ME is a bit of a black hole for OW so they would hugely benefit from doing this.

I wonder if EY would then be fored to look at *A?

There already is a gulf airline in OW - RJ. I can't imagine that QF would want another competitor for the SYD-LHR route in OW...

Can't see how any of the current members would be very pleased with this to be honest.

Since Etihad haven't come in, I can't see why Qatar should or would.

I think the alliances approach to the ME has been mishandled. They should have been sending out invitations 5yrs ago before these airlines cottoned onto the idea they don't really need alliances when they are sitting on oil deposits that everyone else wants to use. Of course, when you're a hot candidate everyone wants to be your friend. But you've got choices then and maybe you can say....well we built this massive airline and a great airport in such a short time, what can you really offer us? We can afford to do everything ourselves if we choose. You really only want us now that we are eating into your market share.

How effective has RJ been as a partner though? Unless travelling from EU, going via AMM mans lots of backtracking when travelling from Asia/Aus, and are there direct flights from US to AMM?

No, QR fly from MEL and soon PER. Thank god, they've avoided SYD.

Yes, there are one stop flights to DXB on CX from every Australia capital, but personally, I have avoided those flights because I've hated those economy shell seats.

In J you need to be careful as well as they still have some aircraft with the regional J seats HKG-DXB which I avoid like the plague.

Would be great having QR join OW, especially as they will be flying into Perth apart from the fact they are an airline that i have been impressed with on the couple of flights i have been on... Although would probably prefer them joining *A so i could redeem my US Air DM awards in J...

I'd be looking at QR as a serious option for my European trips if they joined OW. Not sure it would be good for QF.
