What is the consensus relating to what seems more and more likely - a QF and EK codeshare alliance.

My thoughts:

- QF access into DXB for onward journeys on EK into Europe, Africa, Middle East etc is superb.
- QF to Europe via DXB would be superb if it were allowed.
- Prospect of earning QFF points on EK flights is a plus.
- Access to lounge at DXB for F, J etc would be great.
- QFd will benefit from EK inbound traffic.

Do you think QF would fly into DXB or would it be a "virtual network" like VA has?

Thoughts??

I hope they fly into DXB (even if its just a few days a week supplemented by EK metal the rest of the time), if its just a virtual network then I may as well book with EK directly and sign up to their loyalty program..

What does oneworld think about building status on non-member airlines? Star Alliance definitely frowns upon it - as a result NZ and SQ pax can't build status when flying on VA flights, with a limited exception for NZ trans-tasman codeshares with VA. However, DL pax can build SkyTeam status when flying on VA.

If oneworld's policy is like Star Alliance, then potentially QF pax couldn't earn SCs on flights operated by EK. Even if reciprocal status recognition was arranged, I imagine lack of SCs would be a serious deterrent for QF members to choosing EK. But what would other oneworld partners think about having to give status benefits to QF pax who've earned their status flying EK when EK doesn't give their elites any love?

Subsequent research has answered my own question - airberlin topbonus members can earn status miles when flying EK, and their status is recognised by oneworld.

My guess is that the only codeshares would be on the EK non-stop services between PER/BNE/SYD/MEL and DXB. (and possibly MEL-AKL, SYD-CHC etc)
QF would have to give up domestic Australia for that.

Residing in Perth means that I am all for it. EK are the dominant player in PER for International travel by far and I think it is a fantastic idea.

I do believe that if it happens then the scenario might be that QF flies to a handful of international destinations to connect to other carriers but ups its frequency and standard of service. If QF were to launch daily flights from SYD/MEL/PER/ADL to DBX then it would free up a lot of EK metal to speed up their expansion plans.

EK have a great history of enhancing their program just like QF so maybe there is a good fit there ;)

Personally, I'd like to see Qatar join oneworld.

I just can't see QF metal going to DXB in partership with EK, EK is just too aggressive and single-minded in their approach. I doubt they work with any other airlines into their DXB hub do they?

If AJ has any hope of redemption this would be the key. He needs to manufacture a pretend possible alliance with EK with the hope of forcing QR's hand..........then BANG! QR joins OW and EK is sidelined. It would be bold, game-changing and smart. For these SAME reasons I know it will never happen (but it was soooooo nice to dream for a minute).

As I understand it QR is jumping into bed with IAG. Plus QR does not really have sufficient flights to/from Australia to provide and advantage to QF. It would force QF to commit too much capital to service the partnerships. EK has the money and the metal to make the partnership work.

Long term, if EK took a 35% stake in QF Domestic as suggested then it would also present buying power for new aircraft and better financing terms…. You migh see a couple of 777's heading the direction of QF yet. It is after all EK's preferred jet..

Why would QF want yet another direct competitor doing the AU-EU route? QR goes to 'different' destinations and therefore is a comfortable fit for Oneworld.

EK and Qantas will never work. Too much conflict. EK is also too large and directly competes on tooo many routes.
Additionall, EK already has a far far far far far far superior product trans-tasman, and for less cost.

Teaming up with QF would mean QF elites would fly EK for the bulk of the SC because it's cheaper and better in every area.

1. Doesn't QR's involvement with IAG auger well for QR leaning towards OneWorld?
2. QR certainly has more than enough money and metal to make the partnership work. They are enormous.
3. QR currently have:
A. 26 777s (with 8 more on order).
B. 29 A330s and 4 A340s.
C. ordered a lazy 80 A350s
D. ordered 10 A380s
E. ordered 30 B787s with and option for 30 more
F. (as an aside they have also ordered 50 A320 neos)

As good as they would be for OW with their network, I think there's a better chance of hell freezing over than EK joining an alliance.
Well as quoted by our esteemed moderator in another thread hell has been proven to be frozen-
One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving, which is unlikely.. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct..... ....leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'

EK higher ups have constantly cited the fact that they aren't tied down by a global alliance as one of the reasons behind their massive success and expansion. They seem pretty firmly against the idea of big worldwide alliances, besides EK has so many destinations now that they're doing pretty world on the international coverage front without having to be in an alliance.

Alan Joyce has said that middle eastern carriers with their cheaper cost bases and prime hub locations are partly the reasons QFi is hurting so much. Those statements have pretty emphatically been aimed at EK, so if QF were to join up with EK it'd be very much 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em'. I don't think such a change would happen under AJ's leadership.

Leveraging off their cheaper cost base may be enough to sway AJ. .....?

Oh please, please, EK please buy the [redacted] Orange cancer out!!! Then you can do anything to AJ and his poor aging airline.
