Buying additional baggage for codeshare flights

Hi All, hope someone can help. I've got an airpoints business seat from Bangkok to Christchurch next week via Sydney and Auckland. The Auckland to Christchurch leg is a codeshare economy flight on Jetstar. My e-ticket says my bag allowance on every leg is 32kgs. I want to purchase an additional 32kgs which Qantas lets me do online for A$90. I'm hoping I'd only have to pay My problem is that this will not apply to the Jetstar flight in NZ. I can't access Jetstar with my Qantas booking number to buy additional baggage and the Qantas website says I have to deal with it at the airport.

Sorry half my post got lost in the ether. If I have to pay excess at Auckland airport to Jetstar for my extra 32kgs it will be NZ$70 for the first 15kgs and NZ$15 per kilo after that - NZ$255! I have been online and I can buy an extra ticket on the same flight for NZ$59 and prepurchase 35kgs of baggage for NZ$30 - NZ$89 all up. My question is is there anything to stop me from buying 2 seats on the same plane but only sitting in 1 and using the other for my extra bag? Looking forward to your replies.

Have you got your JQ Booking reference.

If you can get that, you may be able to purchase the extra through the JQ site.

Not sure about the policies regarding the second seat and it's luggage entitlements.

Hi Mannej, I don't have a JQ booking reference no. because it was all booked online at Qantas as one ticket. The Jetstar site won't accept my QF ref. no. Bloody annoying.

You may be able to get your reference by contacting either of the airlines.

I was able to get my QF reference when booked on a JQ codeshare (i.e QF flight, JQ number)

Use the Qantas booking reference on www.checkmytrip.com and the JQ booking reference should be there. Use that on the JQ website, purchase excess baggage.

How many bags will you have - 2 @ 32 kg?

Is it BKK/xSYD QF xAKL/x JQ CHC ie QF metal for the first two flights then JQ for the last flight?

If QF in BKK check your bags thru to CHC you wouldn't need to check them in again at AKL just bag drop after customs so paying JQ excess shouldn't be necessary after you've already paid it to QF otherwise it's allowing the airlines to 'double dip' IMHO.

It's important that you take a copy of the pre-paid baggage receipt proving that excess has already been paid plus your eticket itin/receipt showing the initial 32 kg allowance in case you need to show JQ in AKL.

If I were in the same situation as yourself I wouldn't pay JQ excess as well as that's paying twice & it was on the same booking after all.

It your bags are checked thru to CHC that's great but if they're only checked to AKL & you are forced to check in again have all the QF excess receipts handy to show JQ in AKL.

Hi ozbeachbabe, I would like to have 2 checked bags of 32kgs each. I booked my ticket before the new bag allowances came in in May or I'd be sweet. My e-ticket states I get 32kg each sector including the JQ leg in economy from Auckland to Christchurch. All my flights have QF codes on my e-ticket. The flight from Bangkok to Sydney on the 29th August is QF24 (business) then Sydney to Auckland on QF43 (business) then Auckland to Christchurch on QF4961 (economy). Although QF43 is on JetConnect it's not mentioned on my e-ticket so I guess that's Qantas but it does say that QF4961 is operated by Jetstar. I can go to Manage My Booking and buy an extra 32kgs for A$90 but a yellow message box pops up that says [h=1]Please review the following items[/h]

• Additional baggage allowance is not available online for at least one flight in your trip. Excess baggage can be purchased at the airport.
  Note: Different airlines charge varying amounts for additional checked baggage
• However, under the checked baggage section of the website it also says "If you wish to carry additional baggage you may purchase Additional Baggage Allowance online for Qantas operated flights with a "QF' code."
• All my flights have a QF code so I'm confused. I didn't realise I could check my bags all the way through to Christchurch but if I can that would work. Are you sure this is possible? I have rung Qantas to see if JQ would honour the additional bag but they didn't know and wanted to check with their airport staff last night so should ring me back today. When (if) they do I'll ask about checking my bags through to ChCh.
• I have also rung Jetstar to see about buying additional baggage but they have a 40kg maximum so I could only buy another 8kgs (10kgs actually as that's their minimum) through them. They also said I definitely can't buy an extra seat on the flight if no-one is actually sitting in it so that's a no go. They did say that surely Qantas could help as it's a Star booking (whatever that is) which sort of implies that they would honour it if Qantas told them to!
• Otherwise I see I can have 2 cabin bags of 7kgs each so maybe I can put my heaviest stuff in these and try to wangle it that way. I'm guessing this applies to the JQ sector as well, do you know?

Thanks serfty but that didn't tell me either. I rang Jetstar yesterday and got it from them.
