Hey all,

Has anyone had any experience taking LAGs onto flights in a non-commercial container. For example a home made jelly which is then placed into a tupperware container or a camping tube?
Later this month, I am heading over to the US, and I'm taking some home made foods with me. I want to do the trip HLO, and I would hate to have to check in a bag for the sake of getting 100ml's of mint jelly across there because despite the fact it conforms with LAGs in regards to sizing, it doesn't conform to LAGs in regards to labeling.

As a side note, I plan to take across the recipes I used for each thing so if CBP ask about the food items I have an ingredients listing I can show them.

I did do a google search, but all I'm finding is talking about commercial pre-packaged stuff.

PS Yes I realise they do have both food and kitchens in the US, but I'm not there very long, and the last thing I want to do is spend most of my time there cooking. Nothing I am taking over is likely to cause a problem with CBP, but because the mint jelly is home made there won't be a lovely professionally printed label stating "100mls".

I think you are asking for trouble. Especially jelly as it could be construed for part of an IED.

Only thing I can suggest us go to IHOP when you get there send ask for some pancakes with mint jelly! :-)

The 100ml sizing was chosen as it was determined building any sort of device and only having 100ml sizes to play with was unlikely to be able to cause major damage. Besides, if was I was going to do that, I'd find a commercial pre-packaged product complete with professional label (eg strawberry jam) and then made the "jelly" look like that product. (I know, I asking airport security to use some logic - rookie mistake number 1)

Kinda defies the point of bringing home made stuff along, but not a bad backup plan.

I understand the logic behind the sizing, and that there are a billion easier ways of blowing up a plane, but I still think you are asking for trouble at security. Especially heading to the USA! Airport security globally are not known for their logic and understanding! Nor are they known for consistency or ability to follow their own rules!

You could try it, but maybe not in a Tuppoware as they are horrendously expensive! Maybe try a cheapo container so that if they say no you can scoff the jelly at the airport and bin the container!

If its really important to you, then forget the HLO and check the stuff into the hold. Arrival into the USA will not be any slower as its unlikely you will be processed through immigration before bags are delivered anyway. Its really only an issue for onward USA domestic flights, and your chances of getting it passed them a none and Buckley's.

Flying HLO is more important to me, I'm on a pretty tight but doable schedule out of LAX, as I need to get to Van Nuys by about 9am-ish as I'm being picked up from there.
I was more curious if anyone has had experience doing this. There are no Dom US flights involved and I have no intention of taking any LAGs beyond deodorant back to AU with me.

You won't get in past security here in Aus, any LAGs to the LOTFATP have to be in a clear plastic bag IIRC.

in my experience, checked bags are available in the arrivals area well before you will get through immigration control unless you have an APEC card or US passport, so checking a bag/box is unlikely to delay your exit from customs at LAX.

On my arrival into LAX last month, there was less than 20 people in the line for immigration processing and bags were still there before we arrived at the collection carousel. I was HLO and travelling companion had a checked bag (no priority tags) and I was not delayed in any way as he collected his bag as we walked past the belt and towards customs exit.

The only way you will get it past security screening at SYD is if they just happen to miss it. If they look at it, then its not going to get through. So pack it in a cardboard box and check it in. And if you are running late and for some reason it has not made it to the checked luggage delivery belt before you, then just leave it and walk out. But I reckon 9 times out of 10 (if not 99 times out of 100) it will get there before you and be waiting for collection as you exit immigration processing.

Still going to put the container into the bag with my other LAGs. The question was if the container needed to have a professionally printed label or not.

FWIW, I can find nothing to indicate the container needs to have a professionally printed label - it just needs to have a capacity of not more than 100ml.

The only issue is that Security staff might dispute the container size.

Perhaps you can find Find a resealable 100ml container which is manufactured with a imprinted 100ml. Jell it up and whack it in yon baggie!

I wouldn't have thought a label was required given that stores sell BYO LAGs bottles (I was given some Tumi branded ones) that do not have sizes marked. They must just look the right size. I would be tempted to put the jelly in a larger number of small containers rather than something on the brink.
