Hi all,

Planning a trip to Miami early next year. Looking into W South Beach and wanted to use Points + Pay for a suite, however they are only offering Points + Pay on a Wonderful room. I called the SPG hotline and got told to book suites with Points + Pay is not possible. I'm a Gold SPG member, anyone know if there are any chances that I'll get upgraded to a suite? Alternatively does anyone know if there is a way to book a suite on Points + Pay?

Cheers

Cash and Points bookings are only available on their standard rooms. As its a Category 7 property; 15,000 + USD$275. You will book into a Wonderful Studio which is ~52sqm and to me, that's pretty generous for any hotel room ;) If you then really want to, its an additional 30k-35k per night to get a suite. I do read that the suites are pretty amazing though.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts

I haven't stayed there, I was going to a few months back but ended up at the budget Elements MIA due to an early flight and wasn't prepared to blow 20K (when I booked it as a Cat 6 redemption) for around 8 hours of use. [FWIW the Elements MIA hotel is excellent value].

If you read the FT/SPG/W South Beach thread you will get an idea of the upgrade successes as a Gold. The chances are very slim as a Gold there so good luck.

FWIW, we got upgraded to a suite there in 2010 (SPG Plat) so it does happen.

We'd just gotten engaged in NY, but didn't even play that card!

Nice property. Pity about the rest of the city...

Thank you all for your responses.

I've placed a points + pay booking for a studio in the W South Beach. As great as a suite may be, I do not see the value in spending an additional 20,000 points per night. Plus, I totally agree 52sqm is generally sufficient.

I've also considered taking the SPG Platinum Challenge so that at time of my travel my chances will be increased for an upgrade.

Cheers

If you are going to do the Platinum Challenge, then the USA is the place to do it. Will you meet the criteria?

Note that those that have guaranteed Suite Nigh Award requests fulfilled will be get upgrade priority. In fact, I've found the complimentary upgrades at SOTP have decreased on my last two stays.

I've made a cash + points booking for a 10 night stay so far, as far as I am aware it will not count towards stays in the Platinum Challenge so I will not be able to meet the criteria even if I attempt to have some additional stays elsewhere.
