thanks for taking the time to post the pics and info DeKa, looks great! I have always gone out of my way to fly the 767s domestically because i much prefer any widebody over a 737 or A320, but now there's another reason! Think i'll actually be sad to see them go in 2015.

The 40% range is my iPhone. The iPad was almost fully charged.

Ahh, that's good, would not want an iPad with 40% on the start of a trans con trip.

Here's one: what happens if you damage the iPad (e.g. drop it, heavy impact, scratch the screen, liquid damage, stain....)?

My guess is you play the content on your GT-I9300, whatever that is.

Cool stuff, thanks very much for the pictures!

Just checking out the flights I have booked, have 2 767s next week (MEL-SYD and MEL-PER) so I am crossing my fingers for the iPad plane! (although one of them is one of the three uglies, no hope there lol)

What if the turn around time is only 30 mins, is that long enough to charge one of these iPad's???

An FAQ on QF's website for the trial states that the iPads are only charged once per day:
http://www.qantas.com.au/img/pdf/qstreaming-faqs.pdf

Interestingly the same FAQ says that iPads will only be supplied during the trial; once the product launches it will be exclusively BYO. Obviously that's changed.

they'll be charged at the end of the day, or so the QF website says

edit: fruitcake beat me!

I think during the trial they had an extra battery pack within the iPad case (?) so it could last the whole day.

They did.

I must be lucky to have flown on both the trial aircraft, and this one. I hardly fly domestically.

LOL you're not very familiar with the Samsung devices, are you? ;)

I guess it was more on the point of do you have to pay for the damaged iPad etc.. I mean the natural answer is yes, unless it was truly an accident (and you took all reasonable steps to make sure you were not going to damage the iPad).... Just that I can see some people possibly getting agitated and maybe spilling the odd wine or two on the iPads, or using messy fingers to use the iPad, then blaming Qantas for not providing a robust solution (cf. most IFE systems stand up to plenty). You may also have some (usually older) types who can't use iPads or similar devices, and may mistakenly use ballpoint pens as styluses, scratching the screen.

Yep the damage aspect is something that will start to cost $$ over time!

My iPad charges very slowly. Is there a quick charge available?

Are you using the actual iPad charger and not the iPhone one? The iPad one outputs a higher amp than the iphone allowing it to charge must faster.

A good accountant will have already made adequate provisions.

I would have suspected that said contingency could have pushed the limits of the economics of the iPad option, notwithstanding the non-economic factors (some for and against).

I'll be interested to find out how long the high capacity batteries (assumed) will last; as they start to deteriorate in holding charge, it'll get to the point where once a day charging is not enough, and dare I say it but the full (or reasonable) charge may not even last one flight. And it seems that, short of a comprehensive replacement cycle plan, there is no backup process to account for such possible deficiencies.

Imagine the maintenance savings though. Instead of having to send a tech on board the aircraft with a raft of tools to spend half the night disassembling/repairing/replacing faulty IFE components (dead touch screens, dodgy remotes) the FAs leave the broken ones in a pile at the front, they get shipped to QF's iPad Heavy Maintenance Centre in Manila and cleaners drop new ones in the seat pockets (unless the union finds out, in which case it will probably be deemed that LAMEs are required to load iPads in seat pockets, for safety reasons).

In fact outside of battery management (which I'm sure they have thought of), single seat IFE failure during the flight should be pretty much eliminated, because a dead iPad can be replaced immediately.

Good to see so many here concerned with Qantas' costs and maintenance plans.
