Rats! Qantas in dispute over chewed wiring

The Qantas rats may have struck again.

In June last year, Qantas was forced to ground one of its passenger jets after rats were found on board.

Now the national carrier faces a lawsuit from one of its Platinum customers who alleges that rats chewed through the wiring on his Aston Martin.

Ian Lock, a liquidator from Adelaide, says he dropped off his brand new Aston Martin at Qantas Valet parking on August 16, but when he picked it up the next day he found that rats had chewed through the wiring.

“(They are) threatening me with indemnity costs if I didn’t withdraw my claim forthwith, saying that otherwise Qantas had no option but to pursue the matter to judgment,” said Mr Lock.

“The irony is that I take about 30 domestic flights and four overseas flights each year, nearly all business. Since the rat incident both my wife and I have travelled exclusively with Virgin – 12 domestic trips and three overseas trips booked, in three months, all business class.”

I haven't read the story but it seems that qantas tried to save the cost of repairing the vehicle and in the process have instead taken the cost of his lost flight. I'm sure qantas make enough out of 30 domestic business flights to cover the cost of replacing a few wires.

In defence of Qantas, it should be pointed out that its nothing to do with Qantas re liability IMHO, as they just supply the branding, the contractor would I imagine be the defendant:

The article got quite comical towards the end though...

It is understood that these are not the same rats as were discovered last year in the emergency medical equipment on board the ill-fated 767.Those particular rats were found at Mascot in Sydney, prior to take off, and were believed to have been subsequently exterminated by the airline.
Neither is it known at this point in time whether they are of the same species of rodent as the Sydney rats – though they appear to share a taste for wire.

Sounds like DYKWIA syndrome gone into overdrive, in this instance I hope QF win.. As parking whether Valet or not is subject to an element of risk that you have to accept.

How can he prove it was rats at QF's valet parking car park which did the damage? Does he check his car on a daily basis for wiring damage?
It's very possible to drive a car around with damage and be completely unaware of said damage until something such as a speed hump becomes the straw which broke the camels back, speaking from experience...

Personally I think QF were right to refuse, I don't see any way of attributing liability to them.

Yes point taken medhead, will take note for future, just been screwed over one too many times by VA (more than JQ surprisingly) and still have a bitter taste in my mouth. Anyway I didn't realise I had said it so much, so will shut-up now.

If they supply the branding but sub contract out, they still hold liability.

The issue here is proving where the damage occurred, and as such, good riddance to this person. Unless he has proof of where the damage occurred, IMO he is chucking a tantrum.

Not enough details here - when did he notice the problem? It may have occurred during the valet parking or at may have happened elsewhere and then he drove to the airport.

I left my car in Qantas valet (Sydney) for the day and returned to a voice mail for me to contact valet parking, found out one of the parking Fangio's had wrapped it around a post!
However they did cover the cost of a rental and organised to fix the car. which would have been at a similar cost. As i could not get in the car to drive it probably not as subtle as a rodent attacking the wiring and when or where it happened.
