I realised that afterwards as I was trying to multi quote from my phone to answer AVC's post also, so in hindsight my response looks like I was answering a question you'd already answered yourself so sorry for the confusion there.

I was further disappointed when checking-in in SYD for the code-share flight to Seoul to be told that QF don't do that check-in, and I was directed to the code-share to join the queue there. There was no mention of lounge access when checking in either. As QF platinum I enjoy the abbreviated check-in process of using the First counter... Secondly, I am sure that (admittedly some years ago) I was able to check-in for the same flight at the QF counter. It was a QF flight number. I guess someone will set me straight on all this, but it seems there are fewer and fewer reasons to remain loyal to QF, when those relatively minor (and inexpensive) benefits are removed.

It may be that OZ were one of QF's client airlines at the time and therefore did the checkin for the OZ flight when you last travelled, The fact that QF also had a codeshare agreement with OZ for that sector was a secondary thing.

One of my friends recently flew QF SYD-LHR. She hardly ever flies and hasn't even bothered to sign up for the FF program. At check in she got upgraded from Y to J. Any reason why that would have happened?

OBB did say that sometimes ease and equipment factors may come into it. She may have been in a broken seat as such, making it easier just to move her.

So one of my colleagues who is PS just told me that her and her NB husband got op-uped at the gate SYD-NRT on 18 December 2012. All of my FT/AFF knowledge makes me question how this could be? Surely single WP1/CL/WP/SG would have been given priority?

happened to a friend of mine as well. travelling during peak holiday periods planes can be packed with non-status pax and so just having a plain card might give you enough priority! or as others have said, particular seats were required to keep a family together for example.
