I was looking at Virgin MEL-LAX in about 4 weeks and it was $1,100 depending on which days/flights.

Yes, I certainly agree however, they said they can save $200 on Virgin.

Depending on some luck and timing, Jetstar and AA can sometimes make for a cheap fare.

but anything less than $1300 I'd call cheap.

I would respectfully suggest that you are not likely to get any better price at this point in time. Keep checking for chaeper and you run the risk of losing the price
