Etihad (EY) invited to join One World

UA, CO and US were all part of Star Alliance... Competition is fierce inside and outside alliances anyway. I guess the barometer of friendship inside an alliance is the number of codeshare between members...not too many QF flight numbers on CX metal...

Same goes for QF and MH.

Not even Jetstar made that work (remember the original SYD-KUL service on JQ?).

Some might say even KUL SIN does not work, considering I got a seat today for $7.34 AUD on that sector for the weekend, I would agree.

Is that including all taxes and fees? Because the fare between LHR and CDG is usually £2.50 and I don't think this sector is about to be cancelled...

That was the amount I paid!

I paid AUD0.90 for a MEL-PER on JQ (price match, obviously) and I can't see that route disappearing anytime soon.

I do start to wonder what the odds of QF *leaving* oneworld are.

Their domestic FF program is so strong that surely right now they are just creating an incentive to fly BA, CX, QR, MH or some other long-haul carrier out of Australia. They could simply do reciprocal agreements with AA, EK and and a couple of others and do severe damage to all of those who all, to some extent, are benefiting from their association with the QF FF program.

As for Etihad -- well, they own Air Berlin's FF program and are in the process of merging it with their own so there are already strange connections growing.

I do agree with you there. Continue with AA, continue with EK, they recently started more work with MU (China Eastern) and could potentially do more with JQ.

However, what we don't know is how much benefit they actually get from the alliance, how many bookings connecting off 1W airlines do they get etc. Looking from outside, they could probably go it alone, but perhaps they do well?

Interesting points 777.

One could also wonder if their domestic FF program would be as strong if the incentive of alliance-wide status was removed.

For the domestic-only flyer, it wouldn't really make a difference - though for me personally, being able to earn points on obscure (and shorter) routes around the world is a huge incentive, as it all adds up. While long-haul partnerships are great (EK), other airlines that QF aren't particularly friendly with still offer a great advantage when considering their hubs' geographical location, including BA, MH and CX (and, to a lesser extent, AY). If QF were to go down this route, I honestly can't see them keeping the first three on board in the same capacity (if at all). That would have me seriously reconsidering my domestic flying loyalty, as VA would then have an advantage with SQ's hub, likely leaving QF with JL as their primary Asian partnership.

All speculation and opinion of course (and perhaps drifting a little O/T), but QF leaving oneworld wouldn't just shake-up their international network.

IF EY were to join, QFF could then become the program of choice for residents of the Middle East, as flyers could then pool all their points and SCs to the one FF account from EK*, EY and QR (and the remaining OW airlines), and likely achieve status quite quickly across a very broad range of airlines. It'd seem like an advantage for QF to maintain the OW membership and for EY to join, but that's just my opinion! :)

*Provided that QF codes were booked

I probably wouldn't have said the same thing when I first heard about the invitation though!

QF tickets on AY metal have dried up completely. Vice-versa still seems go for the time being.

Has anyone heard any news about Etihad's invitation to join Oneworld?
