"Jetstar will launch non-stop flights between Melbourne and Tokyo's Narita airport but axe its Gold Coast-Osaka service in a reshuffle of the low-cost airline's Japanese network. The new Melbourne-Tokyo service will see four flights each week on Jetstar's Airbus A330 beginning from 29 April 2014, with flight schedules and fares expected to be released before Christmas."

That's another good result for QLD tourist industry. Now not having those extra tourists coming to QLD will mean less electricity getting used and so that why next years bills will only go up another $260 a year. Isn't that right. And I hope our great leader going to pick up those new European cars while he holidaying in Switzerland, that way us tax payers can save on the import duty, as he can bring them home on the government jet.

in today paper we hear that electricity going up about 5 times the rate of inflation. Blaming on everything but the fact they own the power companies and the lines. Getting told the tourist industry going great, then reading from the first post, we losing another international link. And my final comment was based on the end of the Aussie car industry, and the fact our great leader needs a new build foreign car. Dorothy everything is going well in the land of OZ. That what I tell myself before going to bed. When is the next elections.

I predominately live in Queensland & also manage an inbound tourism business, yet I still find your post bizarre as well.

Well should I be thanking our liberal victorian government for the new direct access to Japan from Melbourne?

It's a great new route for Melbourne, so pleased we now have Tokyo, Honolulu and coughet available direct! Even if it is Jetstar. All 3 are great places to go.

Bangkok is also a JQ destination, I though HKT was from SYD.

I know .... but HNL, HKT and now NRT are all recent additions and they are places that we did not have direct service before on ANY carrier.

HKT is direct from MEL now too.

I am going to miss the JQ19/20 OOL to KIX flights My partner and I go at least 2 or 3 times a year to see family and friends.
Worst thing is now via CNS going over is okay BUT a 4 to 5 hour wait in CNS to connect to OOL on the way back is not good.
Wonder why JQ wont have a better connection in CNS to OOL??
But I can sort of understand on my flight 2 weeks ago it was 2/3 full and if it was not for a school group on the KIX to OOL it would of been very empty.
Has been great 4 or 5 years on JQ to and from KIX.

I'd consider booking a star class on this new route if they launch a sale to celebrate the new route.

Found this article about QF dropping the 3 weekly route 5 years ago, I'd actually forgotten they even flew it!

Yep it's funny how there was no demand back then, yet now it's good enough to start up again

Of course with the direct service QF customers who would fly MEL-SYD-NRT will now likely fly MEL-NRT on JQ and reduce loads/yields on QF SYD-NRT.....

Eventually I expect to see the QF SYD-NRT flight move to JQ too

The Launch of MEL > NRT by JQ is welcome news indeed.

I can see this route being a real winner & no doubt the frequencies will increase very soon.

JQ has been busy tweeking their International routes as of late.

Certainly appears that JQ are focusing on MEL as of late .

Maybe MEL will in fact be bigger than SYD as a base for JQ international routes before too long?

Im lead to believe of all the Asian destinations that QF flies to this route has the stronger loads due to a lack of competition.

If the schedule looks something like JQ MEL > SIN > MEL , that operates most days where you depart around 10am & arrive back into MEL around 6:30am .... then certainly a long weekend is feasible.
