That's another good result for QLD tourist industry. Now not having those extra tourists coming to QLD will mean less electricity getting used and so that why next years bills will only go up another $260 a year. Isn't that right. And I hope our great leader going to pick up those new European cars while he holidaying in Switzerland, that way us tax payers can save on the import duty, as he can bring them home on the government jet.

I find it hard to follow you. We cover electricity, imported cars, Swiss holidays I presume with our new PM and bringing cars home on a 737??

Mate I think you need a break!

'Lucy in the sky with diamonds" related post perhaps..

Given the more or less regular changes made to the flights to Japan over the years, I think JQ is still having trouble trouble to make Japan work for them.

Yeah well I believe they tried to cater to Japanese tourists going to Queensland but this new route should cater well to the many aussies now visiting Japan

Here's JQ's International network from MEL, pretty good compared to what QF offers, however JQ compliments QF's network at MEL, giving the Qantas group a good presence at MEL despite the lack of QF mainline services - QF also code-shares on most services.

No doubt this route will be successful, the demand is growing both ways and I won't be surprised if it is increased in the future - JQ starting off at x4 Weekly is a pretty strong indicator that there is a strong demand for the route.

That's actually pretty impressive - surely better than JQs destinations from SYD?

I'm very happy to see direct MEL-NRT as I took advantage of their 2-4-1 sale a few years ago to fly OOL-KIX//NRT-OOL. For the price it was fantastic. They do this 2-4-1 sale twice a year I believe.

Plus for those QF plats we can use the F lounge before a direct flight to Tokyo (assuming its a day departure)

I'm guessing it will depart around 10am.

I'm also assuming that it will be around 10AM, somewhere between the 9AM-11AM morning departure bank, as I assume it will replicate the OOL & CNS schedules.

MEL sure will be a hell lot busier, more bus gates I would assume too, with the arrival of Aircalin & Cebu Pacific also joining the morning departure bank and new Chinese services to be announced next year.

I'm still of the opinion that Cairns is the best solution. ADL/Hobart/MEL/BNE/SYD -> Cairns -> Osaka/NRT/CTS (seasonal) and any other ski destinations. But I do think Jetstar should be able to make the maximum stop over two hours.

Thanks for putting the map up.

I agree wholeheartedly with your observations QF v's JQ in MEL.

Give it a year or so & that frequency will increase to NRT, The demand for Leisure passengers to adventure to new ski destinations outside of AUS/NZ is taking off rapidly in recent years is just one observation I believe this route will be a hit.

I know .... but HNL, HKT and now NRT are all recent additions and they are places that we did not have direct service before on ANY carrier.

HKT is direct from MEL now too.

What is old is new again. Of course we did have direct service to HNL for many years with CO and NRT with QF for a while and HKT with VA. The LCC model seems to be QF's MEL solution these days.

We were very wrong as to flight timings!

JQ23 MEL 23:00 - NRT 08:20 (+1).
JQ24 NRT 12:45 - MEL 00:15

I guess they are thinking with JQ Japan in place lots of pax will be transferring onto onwards dom flights once they land in NRT?

That's a pretty revolting arrival time into MEL. I prefer the OOL-NRT-OOL times with an evening arrival into and departure from NRT.

The departure time from MEL is not that nice either, I suspect this sceduling is more about helping out JQ Japan more than anything, if they are banking on lots of Australians taking holidays in Japan they had better watch out for the falling AUD - although the Japanese economy is coming out of the doldrums so they may have money to spend holidaying in Australia once the AUD returns to reality.

Agree, and 4h 25min on the ground in NRT seems odd.

I guess at 10.5 hours flight time it's just a smidge too long for a one-frame, same-day turn-around (any delay would have a knock-on effect for days). I think 9 hours flights are an optimal time for a same-day turn-around.

I would love it if someone could have this sort of arrival time ex-SIN. (departing at around 15:00 or 14:00 during DS) Day flights are much better than redeyes, although NRT is long enough to get sleep on a redeye.

[Blatant speculation] Who knows, this timetable would fit neatly in with return flights to Europe (mid morning ex Japan, mid afternoon ex Europe on return)!

The aud/jpy rate is still pretty good. It has not dropped anywhere near what it has vs the pound etc
