For bookings made before 5 March, where travel is 15 Feb - 15 Apr J return is at HKD$9,550 + tax. For travel during 24 Apr - 30 Jun, fares from $9,050 return. After tax you're looking at about HKD$12,659 - which is what QF PE exHKG prices at on the standard discounted fare that is usually always available.

If you're willing to abide by the AFF 'why fly direct when you can connect' maxim, this is a cheap way to fly J and pickup 400 SCs too. Only downside from a MEL perspective is departures are either 0700 or 0010 - so little to no opportunity to FLounge!

Also some good deals ex TPE as well, I found something in the order of NT$45,000 (incl. tax) or so return TPE-KUL-MEL for mid June departure.

Great pick-up! I'm in TPE in April, and I'll have a very limited budget, but there is one-way TPE-KUL-MEL in J for NT$28,000. So one-way QF & CX in Y, and return with MH in J, for around $1800!

MH are cheap for a reason.

Would disagree with the inference here. MH offer fantastic value for their J fares our of Asia and you do not pay the huge penalties you often pay for one way international fares. And this includes great one way fares back to Aus (although often cheaper to fly out of SIN rather than KUL). Their service is great - comparable to J in QF - as a QF FF you may not get as many points as you do with QF - but great value for status credits.
