Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

Here's the official Hyatt link.

I have Diamond through until Feb 2018 so hopefully that gets me a year of top tier.

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

So basically if we retain Diamond by end of Feb 2017 we effectively get grandfathered for another year?

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

I just requalified Diamond this week, so am grateful I'll have effectively a year to trial out the new system and see if it works.

At first blush, my sense is that it's probably going to be a net good for me. I tend to qualify on nights rather than stays, so the extra 10 nights probably isn't going to impact me as much as others. The option for getting upgraded to suites is great as well (particularly as the GH Mel is pretty stingy on going beyond what the program mandates....but equally tend to actually stick to the program promises).

I'm also particularly excited about Explorer. Even if I miss Globalist (which is a distinct possibility) I think Explorer offers meaningful benefits. I couldn't really care about lounge access during work trips, but love having access when SWMBO go away for a weekend so great to be able to have that confirmed in advance.

A shame about the loss of 1W, that was always good for about 20,000 points a year.

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

Lounge Access for Explorer looks a bit weird "Confirmed 4 Times Annually, Up to 7 Nights Each". I wonder how that will work in practice....

My guess is it will be an upgrade certificate you can apply to a standard room booking to confirm an upgrade into a Club room - similar to how the existing DSU's work.

Currently a Diamond gets 4 "Diamond Suite Upgrades" per year for which which can be applied to revenue bookings of up to 7 consecutive nights.

So this is a mid tier benefit providing club lounge access in the same way ...

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

My preliminary thought is my holidays in 2017 just got a bucket load cheaper. As an existing Diamond who will requalify this year for next, I understand I’ll transfer to Globalist status. So I’ll burn my Gold Passport points and obtain all the benefits on award stays, including suite upgrades. Unless there’s a drastic change in the announcement or my work travel suddenly sees me spending five in every 30 nights in a hotel (and in a city with a Hyatt, no less), I will close the curtain on a truly wonderful time with Hyatt.

This is a guttering of Gold Passport. Whether you consider them good or bad, the changes are widespread and significant. A wonderful program is no more.

I understand Hyatt wants to reward those who spend big bucks but it could have achieved this by leaving the existing benefits for Explorists untouched and added new benefits for a new higher level. In fact, pretty much everything that is a benefit of Explorist is new or improved so there was no need to devalue Diamond at the same time. Throw in a 6pm check-out request and you’re done; new tier complete without ostracising and beating up existing top tiers.

The names are silly. Really silly. Platinum and Diamond are much more in keeping with loyalty programs and make much more sense. “Explorist” and “Discoverist” (let alone the plural forms) aren’t even words!

The minute international footprint of Hyatt means they’re really slapping people in the face. I really envy those of you with a half dozen Hyatt properties in your home town.

There is a big jump between best room excluding suites and club level to best room including suites. Best room excluding suites should be a benefit of Discoverists and best room including club should be a benefit of the second top tier.

Late check-out, even for Globalist, is now only by “request”, a significant devaluation.

Significantly increased qualification benefits yet still no stay credit on award nights.

Mattress running for Hyatt is now no more, given whether you spend three nights in three hotels or three nights in the one hotel you’re still ending up with the same outcome towards status.

In my experience with Hilton “best available room excluding suites” is a red bath towel to a hotel bull. “Best available” is open to ridiculous interpretation ensuring the guest, in my opinion, rather gets what is actually the best available.

The lounge access benefit has been gutted for Explorist. Hilton’s second top tier provides it if you’re upgraded to an executive floor room but under World of Hyatt it seems to suggest you won’t get a club room, period.

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

It will work for us. We'd never achieve status via nights however, if it's based on spend we would.

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

Some additional Hyatt clarifications to questions that have come up....

"Hyatt Gold Passport continues to operate exactly the same until the March 1, 2017, launch of World of Hyatt. If a member qualifies for Diamond between 1 Jan and 1 March by having 50 eligible nights or 25 stays under Hyatt Gold Passport, the member’s Diamond tier expiration will be February 2019 and the member will receive Globalist status on March 1, 2017 and have Globalist status through February 2019 in World of Hyatt."

"the club upgrade awards will be similar to existing Diamond Suite Upgrade awards. The Explorist Club Upgrade awards are bookable on standard rooms on eligible rates and award nights, and applied to provide club lounge access for your stay, up to 7 days. What’s new is that these awards (and Suite Upgrade Awards) are now usable on both eligible rates and award nigh

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

As someone who maintains status on stays not nights, to ensure that I maintain Hilton diamond also, this is a loss for me, I wont maintain Hyatt diamond this year... At least they have guaranteed that 2016 Diamonds who do not requalify will get Explorist status for the first year.

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

I expect to renew Diamond this year with with 25 stays over 30 nights - bookings and travel are in place.

So I should be OK for another 16 months.

60 Nights is likely be a bridge too far; I really only have a max of 40 room nights per year.

I could easily get mid level but with no free breakfast/lounge access other than on 4 designated stays per year going forward, due consideration is needed.

Going by my costings for this year and adjusting for techniques I have, 60 nights will cost me a minimum of $10k - I can buy a lot of breakfasts and (club style) wine for that.

I need to decide if Mid-Tier would be ok ... while considering furture plans.

Another consideration is what other hotel loyalty schemes may also make such significant changes going forward.

Your concern re: relevance of the mid-tier is right on the money.

I would also adopt a wait-and-see approach.

I can't give a timeline (may be this year before Xmas, may be next year some time) but expect a major overhaul at HH.

I think that's contradictory to this statement on their website:

While World of Hyatt starts March 1, 2017, all your qualifying nights, Base Points earned and meetings or events held from January 1 through December 31, 2017 count toward earning status for the year.

Re: Big Changes coming to Hyatt's Loyalty program!

The (part) grandfathering of 'until end Feb Diamond' is good, although I suspect Mr Troppo would have qualified by spend to 'Explorist' anyway (at least). I can't see any way to easily check total base points online - seeing as they will be much more critical going forward that is something they will have to address in the usability of their site.

How ridiculous are the names?! I wonder if it's a ploy to stop self-important guests harassing poor reception staff with the "I am DIAMOND" spiel. Obviously no one will want to claim to be a Globalist with all the sinister connotations that entails. I can just imagine the brainstorming session at Hyatt – "Let's name the 3 new tiers to stop the VIPs embracing them too hard! How about 'Fussy F-wit, Demanding D-head and Massive A-hole? Too much? Really? Hmmmm, OK, let's just go with Globalist and some silly sounding made up words. That will still give our beleaguered reception staff a laugh whenever a Massive A-hole misses the irony and demands his due reverence as a Globalist".
