I was reminded of this yesterday.

You can earn elite qualifying points by transferring to IHG from Virgin Atlantic (1:1). VS are also an Amex transfer partner (1:1)

So if you find yourself just short of Spire status, you could move points over to qualify (remembering you are given 25K (non-EQP) IHG points for attaining Spire) until end 2016.

You would want to weigh up waiting until 2016 though which would give you Spire until end 2017 (though obviously might need more points)

Spire doesn't seem to offer much at the moment (except extra points earn and the 25K) but there are 'promises' of additional benefits next year

Worth considering if you are a regular stayer and up to 20K EQP or so short however

Article link below (and I read someone confirm VS transfers still count as EQP yesterday)

How to earn Spire status with IHG Rewards Club

i have made a transfer on the 19th Nov 2015, until today, I still have not seen the points in my IHG account! (160k points)

virgin atlantic told me to wait 30 business days before making enquiry again as that's their policy for these transfers.
