A heads up for all you guys and gals.

Thinking of have a 'pub crawl' by train on the 1st or 2nd Saturday in December and as a way to include a flight will start in Sydney and finish in Canberra and be an all day event.

Will keep you posted.

Matt

Plan as it currently stands is:
As at 6th December - Subject to change:
Sydney Terminal (Central country platforms [Possibly #2]) 10.48am departure (BAM1748 or BAM1741)
Wolli Creek 11.00am pick up.

We will then stop at Thirroul from 12.26 to 13.32 so we can visit the nearby cafe or burger shop for lunch.

We will run through to Goulburn for a stop and Tarago for a pub visit and then on to Canberra.

Depending on running we might skip either Goulburn or Tarago, however it is single track so a good chance we will have to wait for the opposing Explorer passenger movement from Canberra and take advantage by wandering the to the Loaded Dog for a visit.

Arrival into Canberra may be as late as or after 10:00pm

  • Run via the coast line to Moss Vale then back onto the main south to Goulburn....

Because of potential fire bans and cost, we won't be running steam, it will be diesel hauled.

As to costs, I'll ask for donations that I can pass on to a needy group for disadvantaged families coming up to Christmas (see below).

Fellow travellers, some details are now being firmed up, times have been pushed back slightly and a variation to the program, but we are leaving Sydney and ending in Canberra.

Sydney Terminal depart 10.48am (possibly platform 2) please check the trains carefully, there is another similar looking train leaving at 10.36am and heading along the south coast line as we are. Make sure you are boarding a red car with the rego BAM1748 or BAM1741 and the flat car with container. (rego can be found at the carriage mid poind between the windows)

Wolli Creek 11.00 to 11.01am. (If you are here at 10.50am you will see the 'other' train pass through non stop, don't panic we are following)

We will then stop at Thirroul from 12.26 to 13.32 so we can visit the nearby cafe or burger shop for lunch.

We will run through to Goulburn for a stop and Tarago for a pub visit and then on to Canberra. I'm not sure of the arrival time but be prepared for 10pm. Depending on running we might skip either Goulburn or Tarago, however it is single track so a good chance we will have to wait for the opposing Explorer passenger movement from Canberra and take advantage by wandering the to the Loaded Dog for a visit.

I will put some drinks (beer, soft drink and wine) on board this coming week, please feel free to bring your preferred choice of drinks or snacks. We will have a couple of tubs with ice for drinks. There is no charge for anything consumed on board and my barmaid Charlie will be serving in 1748.

As a 'donation' amount, I think around a $100 per adult would seem reasonable but of course larger amounts ar most welcome and I'll come through and collect once we leave Wolli Creek.

Please feel free to PM with me any questions.

Matt

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

The first Saturday will conflict with the AFF get together in HBA. The second Saturday sounds good.

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

This sounds awesome, hopefully I can make it along!

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

The planets seem to have aligned and I do actually have Sat the 14th off, also relatively quiet at the moment!

Yes, date not entirely in my control but have requested the 14th.

I must have a faulty calendar.

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

The 1st Sat in Dec is the 7th Dec , AFF Gathering #7 in Hobart falls on the last Sat in Nov, which is the 30th . :)

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

Nice, if coming ill most likely be day tripping it.

Are you planning a bit of time at the airport and QF or VA Lounge?

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

Our arrival time in Canberra probably won't be until about 8pm, so likely after the last flight.

Pick up AFF special passengers somewhere on the airport line about 10am, run through to Goulburn, 2 hours there for lunch, then 2 hours at the Loaded Dog at Tarago, then 2 hours at Bungendore, 2 hours at Queanbeyan and then into Canberra. Each town has a pub a one block walk from the railway station.

I'd definitely love to do this and will be able to in December :)

When will you be able to confirm the event is going ahead?

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

O/N attendance looking good, SWMBO doesn't mind this train concept!

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

One of the drawbacks of booking flights 6 months in advance is the ability to attend these type of events. :-|

See how things go....

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

I'm very interested, and my father in law has been asking about the possibility of a trip. Will have to get a leave pass for the 14th.

Re: Christmas Drinks, 1st or 2nd Saturday in December

Sounds great. It's rather annoying that I'll be traveling from CDG-SYD at the time.
