After much procrastination, I'm happy to say that the inaugural AFF Southern Tasmania wine tour is being offered for Saturday, 5 November 2016
We will be visiting:
Moorilla Winery (home of MONA)
Pooley Wines (also lunch)
Frogmore Creek
Start will be around 9:00 am in Hobart CBD and we should finish about 4:30pm with a stop at the airport and then finish in Hobart about 5pm. However please don't attempt to make any plane departures before 5:30pm, as I can't guarantee the 4:30 time!
In any event I would encourage people to stay on for the Sunday where I'm sure a few of us will adjourn back to Frogmore Creek for lunch - it was a highlight of the first 'experimental' group visit.
Hobart CBD is about 30 mins from the airport if you plan on flying in on Saturday morning, but of course a Friday evening arrival would be better. There is a Travelodge at Hobart Airport (7 min shuttle) for those with late arrival or early departures.
Lunch will be pizzas from Pooley's Wines and for better or worse I've decided that people will order and pay for lunch on the day. There will be selections of vegetarian, gluten free, salmon based and meat based choices for $10-$12 ea which we will order before the tasting so at least the first round should be ready when we finish that.
Cost I'm estimating at $95-$100 and includes a 'premium' tasting at Pooley (7 wines).
Hobart doesn't have the 'usual chain' hotels, so go here for a guide. I'd recommend downtown Hobart, preferably near the waterfront: Grand Chancellor, Somerset on the Pier, Somerset at Salamanca, Henry Jones Art Hotel, RACT/RACV Apartment Hotel, Lenna are the better ones; also Old Woolstore and Hadley's. Wrest Point and Rydges are out of the CBD and the latter has had mixed reviews by other AFFers.
I'd be grateful if I could get expressions of 'firm' interest (meaning that you will be endeavouring to come, as opposed to just interested); 'Gold' and 'silvers' welcome to say so too, but you won't get DYKWIA recognition . Based on responses I'll set the firm price and then re-check numbers and later look for payments, same method as used in other wine tours. The tour will need 20 committed participants to run.
