What training do you receive in how to deal with highjackers?

It would seem that ET702 has squawked 7500 and is circling Geneva currently (destination was FCO).

You expect an answer for that on a public forum  ??

Give them an upgrade to first, and once they're full of booze a quick whack over the head with the crash axe. Seriously...I'd rather not discuss security issues.

Re: How many engines can you fly on?

It's on Flightradar24.com

Geneva is about 350 nautical miles from Rome. Roughly an hour. Weather in Rome is good, but Geneva is lowish cloud and some fog patches. I wonder how his fuel supply is holding up?

Hi-jacked Ethiopian Ailines (EH702)

This was mentioned in the Ask the Pilot thread but I think it deserves its own and I didnt see another.

Flight EH702 ADD-FCO squawked 7500 when flying over Sudan. The flight was escorted by fighter jets and has landed in Geneva, apparently only 20mins of fuel left. Asylum is being claimed.

The aircraft now has 20 minutes of fuel remaining (8:45pm PST) via LiveATC.net
Reports of one engine potentially flaming out (unconfirmed via LiveATC)
Reports of the aircraft being directed to make an approach but not landing until a response is given regarding the word “asylum” (via LiveATC)
Fuel warning has been received on the flight deck (Via LiveATC)
Aircraft apparently cleared for an ILS approach. What could be a hostage negotiator has been heard on the radio (Via LiveATC)
Response to the request will be given by Swiss Authorities on Short Final for landing on Runway 05 (via LiveATC)
AIRCRAFT HAS LANDED SAFELY (Via FlightRadar24 and LiveATC)
Pilots heard on radio stating they will be exiting via the aircraft flight deck window. (via LiveATC)
Airport/Airspace around Geneva is now closed (via LiveATC)
Unconfirmed reports the aircraft is parked at the end of Runway 05.

20 mins left and a flame out before it landed according to these.

My maths said they couldn't have had much left, but 20 mins and a flameout doesn't quite make sense.

If really low on fuel, you'll open up the cross feed to ensure that all available fuel can be fed to both engines. You won't husband it for one, as there is more drag with one shut down..so you'll actually burn more in total.

The Flighttracker track was offset, so when the aircraft reached the ground, it wasn't over the displayed position of the airfield. That was a worry, but thankfully some sort of glitch.

Re: How many engines can you fly on?

A bit O/T, but Ethiopian Airlines doesn't appeal to me for some reason. Maybe they are better than the name suggests. I should check out some more information.

An airline that will remain on my personal no fly list :)

Whilst I didn't expect the specifics, a generic answer isn't too dissimilar to what is disclosed by authorities such as the Police force etc. in the various shows doing the rounds.

Re: How many engines can you fly on?

Even more reason not to fly with them if their screening/pilot monitoring doesn't pick that up?

Re: How many engines can you fly on?

I realise that there was an incident on a Sochi, Russia (Winter Olympics) bound plane in early February, but am I correct in saying that the incidence of attempted hijackings has substantially declined since the 1970s or early 1980s to be (thankfully) quite rare?

Re: How many engines can you fly on?

I'd send him straight back home. Clearly someone intent on hijacking an aircraft and running out of fuel and killing everyone in board if he does not get his way is not worth having.

The early and often popular theories are often the ones that are incorrect. Time will tell what happened, why it happened and the circumstances which lead to this. A professional person is unlikely to risk everything in such dramatic, high stakes fashion.

Switzerland is notoriously hard to get a visa for. This is taking it to the extreme, especially when he could have driven there after landing in rome.

there must be more to it...

mannej,
I have to agree with the responses from jb747 & markis10 already published that it is not appropriate answer this in a public forum.

I would imagine it's close the coughpit door and open to no one while requesting to land at the nearest airport with some form of special services who can talk it out or storm the aircraft, passengers on the wrong side of the door are on their own. But your screwed if one of the crew are involved.
