[Discussion on Issues raised by] AJ getting pie in the face

It was not I, and I wouldn't do something like this or condone it, but it may have been an observer annoyed about AJ's preaching to the rest of the community as to what we must do in relation to a very controversial social affairs topic.

I don't agree with AJ's views, and many I speak to also disagree with him. Many QF staff would also disagree. That's their right in a democratic society, however much the many left wing journalists might preach to us otherwise.

The alleged pie thrower looked very calm while surrounded by hotel security staff. Throwing cream pies - Wiki... calls it 'pieing' (not a term I've heard in Oz) has a tradition going back to at least 1970 when directed at those who are politicians or who make political statements as 'authority' figures. AJ has done the latter, and very publicly.

Wiki points out that a reasons cream pies are used is that (a) they are not hot, and hence do not cause any lasting damage (b) they are designed to be funny or to humiliate or embarrass. Nothing that a clever speaker cannot deal with, and make a joke out of later, but there's also the dry cleaning bill to deal with.

I used the word 'may.' I didn't say 'must.'

Many in our community might not speak up loudly but there is a lot of annoyance at these left wing figures pushing their views on the rest of us.

I agree that this might be a thing, however I would also submit that, many in our community might not speak up loudly but there is a lot of annoyance at these right wing figures pushing their views on the rest of us.

Whether that turns out to be the case or not, I hardly see how those views affect you.

I applaud your use of the word preaching though, it's just unfortunate that is exactly what has been going on for years from the right, interfering with my and many others lives, when what happens in our personal lives shouldn't (and doesn't) affect anyone else's lives.

That's all I'll say on that subject though.

Glad it was just a pie though!

He didnt do it because hes unhappy about his share values, he did it because on his hate of homosexuality and gay marriage.

Did he throw a pie into any of the other 19 CEOs that also support equal rights? No, he selected the gay guy because he wanted to humiliate the gay man.

[FONT=&quot]Until he speaks more on the issue and put his foot into it, we'll just have to wait but I would consider it a common theme that a person who considers himself very christian (Snr member of Church of Christ & National Dir of the WA Full Gospel Fellowship) and is very anti equal marriage, enough to assault someone over their opinion of it, is usually anti gay as well. This guy might think hes OK with gay people but only if they keep to themselves and dont do anything in front of him. Only the hetrosexuals get to hold hands, kiss or marry.

He didnt lie in wait for hours with his choice of weapon to hit anyone else that has spoken in favor of equal marriage. He had plenty of other people to choose from, planes leave WA all the time, business leaders speak in WA often. [/FONT]

We can guess what was really in his mind all we like; he may have gotten around to the others eventually given the opportunity. (BTW, he took an awfully long time to humiliate a prominent gay man, if that was his sole motivation. I reckon Joyce's outspokenness (on Qantas' dime) on gay marriage probably came into it quite a bit, but that's just more speculation).

I was taking issue with what I thought was a silly claim that this incident (assault via a cream in the face) was a "textbook definition of a hate crime". I would say a textbook example or 'definition' of a hate crime is lynching a black man by the KKK, or beheading someone of the wrong religion on a public street.

Supporters of gay marriage do their cause little good by gross over-reach. It was a pie in the face, for heaven's sake - see drron's post for other examples.
