Well the election has been called and we get to decide who will lead the country for the next three years. Julia or Tony?

Let the fun begin

What would you like to see as an election promise? Especially regarding flying?

I hope to be out of the country, esp. in the lead up when all the false / fake promises are made. As per usual, I'll be doing a postal vote to avoid the scrum at the local school / church on the day itself:shock:

I'm off to NZ ...:lol::lol::lol:

And I will be on a cruise in the Arctic Circle having seen polar bears and walrusses-both will be much better than the Tony and Julia show.

Hmmm, I am obviously out of step with some fellow AFFers. As a political junkie, I actually rearranged my vacation to Fiji to allow me to be home for the entire campaign and, as I will be in Brisneyland on 21/22 August to attend a couple of events (during the day) that I can’t get out of, I have already switched hotels to ensure that I will have access to the coverage on a true 16:9 ratio screen (my favourite BNE hotel only offers stretched 4:3 images on their plasmas). Sad and more than a little sick to some, no doubt, but hey it keeps me going :)

I have to decide if I want to re-enroll before the election or not. It's not illegal for me to not re-enroll (at the moment), although I do have the option. Even if I do re-enroll, I don't even have to vote. We have an amazing electoral system!

Does anyone know when the writ will be signed? Or did it occur today ... if today, then the above options aren't available to me (except don't enroll and don't vote!)

;)

I could probably check, but does anyone know if the Liberals are againt Mandatory Internet Filtering by the Government?

But this is going to be a clean campaign without elaborate over the top promises :!:    :p

The writs will be issued at 6pm on Monday.

I presume this is with tongue firmly in cheek.

As has been made obvious to those previously unaware, you get to decide who your local member is. No more, no less.

How many people would prefer their local member over either of them :?:

But if you do re-enroll you will have to turn up and have your name marked off the list. No one has to vote but they do have to turn up to a polling booth.

There is a loophole in the system. I currently fit into that loophole. If I choose to re-register (which I'm not forced to at the moment), I don't actually have to vote.

I'll let you do the research and work out why ;)

Fully aware of this and yes a bit tongue in cheek. But by voting in our local member we can help their party form government if there are enough local members from the same party elected.

For Mal, would it be because you have UK citizenship (and Australian residency) from the period when you were allowed to vote without actually being required to attain Australian citizenship?

Personally I'm happy to live on in ignorance of electoral laws. I can only imagine it is something to do with your recent return from england. Perhaps you have an overseas address or plan to return or something. But I would have thought that in order to enrol you will need to specify an australian address so they can determine your electorate. So they wouldn't enrol you to start with.

I also had the impression that all australians are requires to enrol at there current address. Again this is only my impression, I'll freely admit ignorance of the exact law. So if you are living in Oz I don't think you have the option not to enrol. Of course, if you do enrol after tomorrow you can't vote anyway ;)

Oh residency, yep my brother in law has that not voting residency thing as well. Srilankan so no voting residency loophole

Close. I don't yet have a permanent place of residency in Australia (still in transient accommodation). Therefore I should be eligible for "No fixed address" registration. If approved, there is no requirement to vote once registered (although they can remove you from the roll if you don't vote). There is also no requirement to actually register.

Once I find a permanent place to live, then I have a month to change my registration over (or register I assume).

I'm not the normal type of person they target with that type of registration, but everything seems to add up...

Getting back to the UK stuff - didn't have a UK passport, but they let me register as a Commonwealth citizen. Was able to vote in the election. It is strange how various countries work with enrolment etc.

I'd prefer either of them rather than my local member.:(

Mmmm. I live on the Sunshine Coast as well. Served by two absolute duds. Both should have been chucked years ago. I've lived in both electorates. Which one sends you the endless taxpayer funded junk mail extolling their virtues? The one who took the picture or the one in the picture?

How many people would prefer their local member over either of them :?:

All three are persons I'd not vote for willingly.

Gillard is the stooge of the unions and the mining corporations.
Abbott is firmly in the pray pocket of the religious right.
And my local member is our spineless Treasurer; Wayne Swan; who does not have the balls to bring the banks to heel.
