Not sure if this is the right place or not,

But I have found myself twice now asking the question, "I am a SG, should I become a WP? will it be worth it?"

So I made up a little decision based spreadsheet based on a few variables, and nominal values.
I figure this sheet could be expanded with the help of other things to factor in, or perhaps other suggestions.

Anyway, take a look, tell me what you think, is it of any value to anyone else? it was for me at least. :)

Admin/moderator note: I notice we are not allowed to attach spreadsheets, so I have linked to it instead (on my website), please let me know if this is not ok, or what the lay of the land is on these matters.

Cheers

Brilliant ReLoad:D

I think I will stay Scum, especially being Perth based.

Cheers - made a late work night much more enjoyable.

With your permission, I will pass this to the other workaholics here - full accreditation to yourself.

Will now sit back, finish listening to Flogging a Dead Horse by the Pistols and go home by 1.00 am.

Life is definetly too short!!

Love it - great way to help logically justify an emotional decision ;)

Your spreadsheet told me it was well-and-truly worth it for me, but only because of the amount of value I put in Part W ;)

Part W is brilliant and probably a big factor for many.

All depends on the value of "W" really....having said that, I will probably requaliy WP this year again (so WP expires Oct 13), but unless I'm comped next year, will probably not requalify WP....

Love the "outcome" assessments you put into the calculator!

I'm trying to figure this for when I was just a SG and looking at WP (I created at least a thread about it until I said, "stuff it, let's do it").

I'd have to dig out all my old e-tix and what not to do the assessment properly. Also, the valuation of everything has changed since then (fares were generally higher, people didn't do as many F Lounge runs)

Thanks.

This was worth a good laugh and reinforced my wife's decision re retaining WP.

Interestingly, what did people put for the value of some of the self-valuation fields?

e.g. value of a F Lounge visit, being helped in a sticky situation, getting access to more Classics, or..... dare I say it.... the W factor?

Speak for yourself :!:

This is great. Asks some good questions. The fact that I am pretty much not paying for my flights to achieve Plat skewed it for me a bit, but I liked how it made me think about different aspects of the benefits and the worth I attribute it to them.
Thanks so much.
This should totes be stickied IMHO.

Thanks for the good feedback everyone :)

I'll add a few more variables, for example, the Soft landing down to SG the following period is worth something too.
Is there any other variables worth considering?

I thought about doing a PS to SG O-Matic as well, but to me that is such a no brainier given lounge value that I don't think I'll bother - thoughts?

being helped in a sticky situation

I didn't put a $$ value on this and haven't needed it yet... but if the need arose I reckon I'd value it pretty highly.

getting access to more Classics,

Again, didn't place a $$ value on it, but I value this highly. Can't comment on how it differs between SG and WP, but class award availability for NBs sucks, and not point having all these points (no pun intended) if you can't use 'em.
or..... dare I say it.... the W factor?

If I'm being honest with myself... a little bit of value ;-)

The one thing that wasn't in the spreadsheet that I'd definitely add is the unpublished benefit of WPs often being able to change non-Flexi flights at no cost (maybe because SGs get this too? I'm not sure).

A fair chunk of my domestic flying is in discount Y, and in the ~6 months since becoming WP I reckon I've saved myself 12+ hours of waiting in airports due to J lounge staff bumping me to earlier flights at no cost despite being on Sale / Red e-Deal tickets. I used to try asking the same question when I was NB and the answer was invariably "we can do that Sir, but will cost you x hundred dollars".

Thank you everyone for thier feedback.

Wafliron -that is a great undocumented feature of WP status! added to the sheet.

Version 0.4 is now up

Here: Is_WP_Worth_It_O_Matic.xls

Changelog: v 0.4

  • I have fleshed out the Priority check in and luggage sections.
  • Added a variable for Soft landing down to SG
  • Added a variable for changing the unchangeable flights.

A very thorough and extensive set of criteria there ReLoad! I haven't undertaken the actual exercise as it is currently moot, but there will be a time when it is not, and I have squirrelled a copy of the s/sheet away for that time (or if I get time to check back and retrospectively do it based on my situation a couple of years ago). Great effort. :)

This is a virgin benefit? I regularly get turned down for a flight change by qantas as a WP.

FWIW I've turned up late at SYD QF having missed check-in for a classic award with the Shrek family in tow and been re-booked on the next flight no questions asked.

I have had this once as well. However I have turned up a number of times for a 2045 flight and have been told "oh that's a rededeal, sorry can't change it". It happens sometimes but definitely not enough to claim it is a benefit that can be relied on or factored in.

Several occasions have arrived delayed by traffic & human error . No worries, always just re-scheduled. This is Classic Awards, ASA, el cheapo discount Y, & better. Just like the good old days.

Also if I arrive early & ask, a check is always done to see if I can easily been accommodated on an earlier flight. Sometimes even if I don't ask, I am offered an earlier flight. Occasionally I say no because am meeting someone in the lounge.
