I was on QF548 (19:05 service) SYD-BNE yesterday and when the meal service came around the person next to me asked for a bottle of wine and I asked for a beer. The flight attendant was entirely sure that we had to pay for it as it was a public holiday. I insisted it should be complimentary and she said she will ask the CSM but never came back to me about it. I was not going to pay for the beer so ordered a juice instead.

I feel Qantas was in the wrong and while it is not great deal feel that they did not deliver on a promised service. Here is what the website has to say Qantas Inflight Cuisine

Qantas Inflight Cuisine said:
Domestic Economy

With our domestic Economy world-leading cuisine, you will enjoy inflight meals suited to the time of day you travel and the length of your flight, with complimentary meals or refreshments on all flights - a full service experience.

Enjoy warm bakery items+ and blended juices for breakfast, snack on cupcakes or warmed scrolls in between meal times, or enjoy a hot dinner+ on your way home.

Complimentary beer and wine is served from 4pm on Cityflyer flights on weekdays (and after noon on Perth services every day), along with a selection of complimentary non-alcoholic beverages available on all flights.

+ Available on most flights. Dinner service time may vary.
I realise yesterday was a public holiday but it was also a weekday. There is no exclusion on the website (as far as I can see) between weekdays, weekends and public holidays.

What do people think? I know this is trivial but was yesterday a weekday or weekend? Should I follow up Qantas with some feedback? ;)

That thread had more to do with the PER-East Coast services which have complimentary alcohol after noon every day.

Some people did report getting complimentary beer and wine service on public holidays on weekdays. Very disappointing that Qantas cannot provide consistent service as per their website.

You should get a hot meal and bar service. End of story. No exclusion for public holidays mentioned. Next time, buy a beer and send the bill to Joyce :p

I have always wondered how the alcohol is accounted for in Y if its paid for given its free in J???? And the lack of receipts does not stop me wondering, I am sure QF have a system and staff are honest but it does seem odd compared to the LCC's setup.

I've always wondered what happens if you ask for a receipt? (I wonder if member 737 would know?)

Having flown MEL-PER and vice versa many times on public holidays, I can confirm that it was offered, not required to be asked for. "We are happy to offer our main cabin passengers complimentary beer or wine with their meal. Spirits can be purchased for $6". This has been on QF776 from PER to MEL on every Monday public holiday I remember taking it for the past few years.

Difference being PER cityflyer services have alcohol for free every day ie daily as per the earlier post - which is not what is being discussed here in terms of what is a weekday!

It is the inconsistency in the published service that irks me and then both flight attendant and CSM were quite adamant that is was not a weekday but a public holiday. I mentioned to the flight attendant "do you realise that the website clearly states weekdays" as I had already read about this previously.

Anyone who tells you Monday or Friday aren't weekdays should be referred immediately to a dictionary :p

Sometimes I think there is too much left to crew discretion, which means you don't get a consistent level of service.

Anyway as trivial as it may sound I have submitted feedback to Qantas about my experience on the flight last night. Inconsistency in service, and ignoring what is published on the website, should not be expected from a "premium" carrier....

I flew Qantas in Y on Australia Day from MEL-SYD (which was a Tuesday Public Holiday) and got free wine. Seems a little inconsistent.

I have finally received a call from Qantas Customer Care regarding the feedback I submitted. Had a lovely chat to Michelle and the inconstistency in service. She called a senior member of the cabin crew staff who agreed that weekdays includes any public holiday and it was wrong for Qantas not to provide the service on my flight last week.

End result is memo will be sent to cabin crew reminding them that public holidays are also weekdays and all CityFlyer services to include complimentary alcohol after 4:00pm and if it happens again to call her. Nice win, even if trivial, for the little guy.

P.S have a flight coming up on Anzac Day....

One wonders if they have not been there before, the Citiflyer wording for the NZ services seemed to indicated they had when it operated:

CityFlyer

"Qantas CityFlyer operates between Auckland and Wellington or Auckland and Christchurch Monday to Friday excluding public holidays."

Good work John, I look forward to my 405pm flight on Anzac Day......:) (the 305pm looked a little "early" for me.......)

Excellent outcome John.

Don't lose that phone number :!:

Interesting as this is how the chat started. She wanted to thank me for the feedback and would send a note to IT to fix up the website. When I persevered about people getting complimentary alcohol on Australia Day and I have also had it in the past she then called senior cabin crew and called me back with the answer I posted.

I forgot to mention that she was extremely disappointed that a customer knew more than the cabin crew on what service should have been offered.

I do have her phone number and will also print out the website page so there is no confussion next time.

Interestingly, the same person I spoke to in regards to the recent cabin crew troubles. Good to see a result of sorts.

Well, there is no real way that we can keep track of what we sell, we do not record what we give out or anything and I guess it is built on honesty. They are/were doing audits on the bar stocks to see if what we sold matched up with how much money we collected on that service, but that does seem an arduous task, but formally, there is no stocktake/inventory on board per se.

In the past year I have had one person ask me for a receipt and as far as I know we don't have the facility on board. I just say that there is no facility to provide it on board. Generally it is not a problem on board as most people don't require a receipt.

EDIT: And glad the OP's issue was sorted out very promptly, I was a bit late to replying with this one :)
