City Flyer Services on Weekdays

I have a better idea. Rather than individually educating each FA about the definition of weekday vs public holiday, why doesn't Qantas change the definition to "Workday"?

This was, after all, the intention of the free drinks after 4pm for Cityflyer flights - to top up the poor QC members who might otherwise have to go for over an hour without drinkies. It was not intended for tourists and non-status plebs - but seeing as it is impossible to weed them all out, they also gain the benefit of complimentary wine and beer on these flights.

But there will be precious few business travellers forsaking a public holiday for the love of their company, so it is quite reasonable for Qantas to suspend the bar tab on those days. They just need to fix up their T&C's.

With reference to which location? Where the flight originates? Or a standard, e.g. New South Wales?

For example, it could be the Queen's Birthday holiday in QLD, but not in WA. Similarly, Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne and ACT, but not anywhere else.

Just stick to weekdays and that'll be good enough; unless they really want to say "except for such-and-such a day, etc.". Just like QF did not have a different Monday schedule yesterday compared to the Monday before it (even though one is a public holiday and another is not, although this doesn't take into account any coalescing of pax numbers on flights which QF may do).

FWIW, although she didn't offer it straight up, I did ask whether there was complimentary bar for my flight yesterday (26 Apr) SYD-BNE, and the FA said 'yes'.

I should have pushed the FA on my Monday flight, but the thought of anymore alcohol after a w/e of pinot on the Mornington Peninsula (as well as some bubbly in the lounge) was unbearable. My apologies for not taking the opportunity to promote consistency. x

Hi all,

To make it easy why not just have 1 free drink on all flights after 4pm anyday of the week.

Simple to remember and simple to police.

I can generally manage 2 if I am in the first few rows of whY on a MEL-SYD flight...

I fly MEL-BNE-MEL about every second weekend, including just about every long weekend - I've never had to pay for a drink on a public holiday. I always notice it too because I normally fly back on Sundays (where you don't get a drink) so it's always nice on long weekends to get free drinks.

I think the policy is a bit silly; I pay the same fare to fly on a Sunday night, it's just as full as the flights on Friday, why can't my fare include a few drinks?

I've got a great system, I get a drink with the meal (wouldn't dare ask for one before this) - get a refill when they clear the trays, then I go to the loo and while I'm up the back I get another from the galley. If I'm flying in a 767 I've even managed four as I'm much closer to the galley.

One other point - BRING BACK SPIRITS! I used to enjoy a few rum & cokes on the DRW - BNE flight. You also didn't need to pee as much!

It's all part of the service to attract the corporate fares to Qantas. Weekdays tend to have more such flyers.

As per my plan, 1 drink on all flights after 4pm and Plats drink free.

When did they remove spirits from QF, I had a Wild Turkey and Lemonade (or two) on my last MEL-SYD flight a couple of weeks ago.

All WA originated flights have had it removed, that should not affect the DRW-BNE flight as it originates in BNE though.

Drunk miners force full strength beer, spirits off Qantas

I knew about the WA flights but the mention of DRW-BNE confused me.

I have just spoken about this to a staff member who was on the same flight as me (I was in J he in Y) and he said when he asked for a Bourbon he was told no spirits on a short flight (MEL-SYD).

Maybe it has something to do with the time it takes to arrange mixed drinks and everyone is being put on beer and wine as it is quick and easy.

There's no spirits on any domestic QF flight (or shouldn't be).

I long suspected this because I've asked a few times on a variety of aircraft and routes, and each time been told they don't have spirits in Y. But it was on the DRW - BNE 767 service when I smelt a rat - if any flight was going to have spirits it would be that one. It's not cityflyer, so you have to pay for all your drinks. So what the hell does Qantas care what you're drinking. Rum was always a popular option on that flight, the drink of choice for Defence & Miners, especially from QLD/NT.

I read an article in Australian Aviation, I think it was the March issue, where it said Qantas had removed spirits from all of it's domestic flights. They've obviously done it gradually so there wasn't a sudden outcry.

A spirit costs about the same as a beer (talking straight spirits here, not premix; Qantas never sold premix). If you want to get drunk you're better off with wine, as they are generally served 2.0 standard drinks at a time. Fair enough you can throw down a spirit, but Qantas have to serve individual drinks so they can use their RSA skills (that the Qantas Club seem to be experts at) and force passengers to pace themselves.

But anyway, the article said they did it to reduce antisocial behavior on flights. I fly with Qantas often and have rarely had an issue with drunk passengers - it seems to happen a lot more with the low cost carriers. And yet Jetstar still serve rum, don't they?

I thought that spirits are still kept in the J cabin. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I remember someone ordering a scotch and soda one time for a pre-meal drink when I was in J. Also saw someone having a Baileys the other day (look from row 4 into J, it was a 734); admittedly the Baileys was served in a tiny bottle (the types that some hotels will leave in the minibar).

Sorry, yes they are still available in J - only removed from Y. If someone wants to pay $1K to fly MEL - BNE bloody oath they should be able to drink whatever they want!

Almost another reason to fly J now, just to drink spirits!
