Looking for two weeks in USA with Mrs lime, so JASA x 2, have 390K points (+pay taxes), can go out of CNS, BNE, SYD or MEL, travel anywhere between July to Oct. 2012, can't find any seats out of OZ to suit, not wish to go via NZ or ASIA and would like to go one way on 380 (but not paramount), called QFF got nowhere, any gurus know better?.

I can see 2 x J on QF7 SYD-DFW on July 24th and July 31st - and that's just checking the first month.
For LAX, there's lots of options via AKL.

I think that to get 2 x J on the A380 SYD-LAX, you need to book 365 days out (when people will snap them up as soon as they come out), or wait till closer to the date and hope that the loads are low enough that QF release more seats. There are some days where there is 1 seat. If you are WP, you can ask them to release another seat.

thanks for the input,

Have you flown J on the AUK/LAX leg in the Airbus Industrie A330-200?.

Was aware 365 days it is best, were some eats but not 2 recently for Aug. waited bit too long till had enough points.

So a WP can possibly get seats released but SG can't?.

My search continues.

Get a free five day Expert flyer subscription and look for U class - with that many points look for P (First) as well.

Also look for Z (PE) class (you can request upgrade with points to U from Z booked as a WASA).

Look for MEL/BNE/SYD-LAX and SYD/DFW each way.

If you are really into getting those seats, the annual E/F subscription may well be worth it. You can get a 15% discount if you are an AFF Gold.

It appears to me status does not come into xASA availability online. If E/F shows P/U/Z/X for a flight then generally a classic level points xASA will be available - but not always.

FWIW, I have a FASA in April MEL-LAX book in September and a WASA LAX-MEL in June, booked Octovber.

Apologies for butting into this thread, but I was curious if you could do a WP seat request for an ASA? I though this only applied to classic award seats?

There was a JASA I wanted to book recently where there was only one seat available at the cheap price - as soon as I tried to book two, the cheap price disappeared.

No, but I've flown ADL-SIN on QF81/82 (same aircraft). The Skybeds are pretty similar to the 747 ones - from memory one storage compartment and the drink bottle holder slot are missing. But seat comfort is the same.

If you prefer to fly direct, then maybe check SYD-DFW for other months - I only checked July.
The suggestion of booking a PE ASA, and then applying for an upgrade is another option. Though you do run the risk of not getting the upgrade.

I've never asked for a cheap ASA to be made available, but you can request a classic award seat to be made available. That's at the discretion of yield management

If we could stand JQ in their so called "J" SYD/HNL/SYD recently then the Airbus 300 should be OK with any bed.

Best to date was 2 x J but only 11 days apart one leg via NZ, long way to go for such short period. if can't fimd anything suitable could buy 2 PE and go in lottery for upgrade. Checked SYD/DFW need more points than I have (392K) for 2 in J.

Then again we go to Hong Kong trade show every year in April direct from our home port of Cairns (CX only 7 hours), so looked at 2 x J HKG/SFO/HKG with CX to SFO using QFF award, none available on dates we need, can buy though for 5 grand each and much better entry exit point to USA too, and get stack of status & flyer points as well, just not sure which CX aircraft have the new J seats, never liked the older CX J herringbone seats (who did).

Tried the free Expert Flyer find award seats and searched QFF site yet again for 2 x JASA out of SYD or BNE to LAX return for 192K points each + taxes from July to October 2012, can't find any 15day to 18 days duration.

Also, called QFF got nowhere, frustrating to say the least, SG with 390K QFF points and I can't even book a JASA 9/10 months out.

Thinking in 2012 have to start sending my thousands of annual buy points to my new VA SG match instead of QFF.

Points are one big game... you'll find something.

I had great difficulty last year in finding a rtn JASA to the UK for May of this year. I could get over there okay but couldn’t get back here the required three or four weeks later. In the end, I booked a JASA leaving in May but returning in October. I then nested a paid MAN to MEL ticket leaving the UK in June and returning me back there in September. Qantas A380 seat 80A for less than $1200 equivalent so very happy in the end :D

Is there any chance you could consider two trips :confused:

Maybe not a Platinum but I believe Qantas will make Any Seat award seats available for a Platinum One....

Yesterday booked a one way JASA BNE/LAX (Mrs Lime/self) next August, didn't find a return within two weeks or so, but are many ways to get back to OZ, might do SFO to HKG (have friends there) as award via CX and try the latest new J seats, then grab 2 JASA back to OZ.

Ok, I've got to a point of having to reply. Simple point to make about all this talk of releasing any seat awards. Simply put it is an Any Seat Award, they are available whenever there are seats available for sale. There is nothing to release! The only problem is the points cost will be excessive, it which case you actually want them to release a classic award and then let you book it as an ASA.

Now to the OPs problem. I just did a random search for August, as best I can work out the OP wants to fly anytime from July to September for a total travel time of 12 to 18 days. I found what is below, checking the fare class it says U for all flights. Obvious problem, I only searched for one person.

Thanks Medhead, though need two.

Found Classic Award PE/J LAX/BNE/CNS for 192K plus $640 for both of us, then could go into upgrade lottery for J on long haul, we are thinking about it.

Hi all

I'm intrigued by the above comment and wanted to know how this can be done.

I currently have 4 return MEL to Tokyo PE tickets for late Sep\Oct 2012.
I acquired these by swapping my points for classic awards.

Closer to the date, how can I upgrade all 4 PE to Biz or even First using points? Is this possible?

Thanks

Regards
Richie

I do hope you haven't purchased this ticket.

You have been charged the business class fare (i.e. amount of points) for the whole trip but only given PE for the main journey.

Totally unacceptable behaviour by Qantas in allowing this to be offered.

If you are happy to sit in PE for the main journey the price the ticket at a PE fare.

Good points Hvr, and as indicated by Richie Teh, Classic awards are not upgradable with points as PE/J ASA's are.

I would book that separately to save the points on LAX/BNE, provided you were happy with PE across the pacific.
