Food for First Sin - Syd (QF002) - 8 Courses?

Hi everyone,

I managed to score 2 FASA from SIN-SYD, which is I think forms the second part of the LHR - SYD... anyway I was wondering if we get the 8 course rockpool menu? I believe the flight leaves SIN 20:00 and arrives SYD the following morning, so might be a bit weird eating 8 courses but would like to try it anyway!

My experience is the degustation menu is available only ex Syd and you need to book it in advance via the First Desk. Of course you can enjoy a few extra serves in the Syd FLounge.
 
I think degustation is only available ex-Australia (SYD or MEL, except QF29). From my previous experience, I would not think it would require preordering.

Out of SIN, you'll get dinner (selection of set courses - not a degustation). I guess you could always order small amounts to make a pseudo-degustation, though that might annoy the crew and take away valuable sleep time from you.

Second meal will be breakfast, though I suspect it will be continental given the short flight time and very early arrival (my experience flying QF10 SIN-MEL is that F was served continental, though most pax actually just slept until descent and went without).

Bummer! I wanted to try it, none the less, better than nothing...

The downside is that its an overnight flight, although would love a daytime one so I can stay awake the whole duration!

I've done the tasting menu, ex-MEL, without a pre-reservation or anything. Be warned - it's a lot of food. It's basically (almost) every course on the menu, in their standard portion sizes - so less degustation, more Mr Creosote.
 
Well the regular portions must be huge then :) I can normally finish a 14 course degust before breakfast but with this one I was stuffed after the main and had to skip dessert and cheese!

Well the regular portions must be huge then :) I can normally finish a 14 course degust before breakfast but with this one I was stuffed after the main and had to skip dessert and cheese!

By degust standards, the QF onboard experience does have larger portions, but they are not the mains sizes. The wine pours are also considerably generous per course (and these, combined with being in the air, really do well to fill you up fast!). Finally, most degusts - even 8 courses - should take a few hours, which is not time you easily lend yourself on an aircraft.

There is a lot of food, so pace yourself if you are not a big eater. Enjoy.

As for pre-ordering, I always call the First Desk and request the degustation as I have been told by QF F FAs that it is not always available. If you have a favourite wine or 2 from the QF F wine list, you can also ask to have those wines on your flight. Never hurts to politely ask and say "Thanks, I really appreciate that" with a smile.

This is QF FIRST CLASS after all. It is more than just a better seat / bed and nice PJs (yes much better than J PJs).
 
Had the pleasure of the degustation ex Syd last year, definitely a Travel experience to treasure.

Pace yourself in the lounge with your drinking. With the generous matching wines onboard I found myself falling asleep during the cheese course.
 
I thought that the SIN-SYD leg of QF2 is a morning departure?

Looking about 10-11 months ahead, all the SIN-SYD flights seem to be moving to night departures (with arrival early in the morning, with the exception of QF82 via ADL). QF2 (ex-LHR), QF6 (ex-FRA) and QF320 (BA codeshare ex-LHR) all departing within a space of an hour, and all arriving similarly after 6.00am in SYD.

Combined with the other SYD arrivals early in the morning, that's going to be absolute hell for inbound immigration (compounded by SYD's inability to probably deal with that many passengers effectively).
 
I've done the degustation every time I've been in F out of SYD to LAX or LHR without pre-ordering. It is simply an option on the menu.

The serves are not huge but I don't know whether they are smaller than the normal separate courses as I've never made the comparison. Certainly, it fills you but I've never thought excessively.

The wine and food (in that order :mrgreen:) has always been my favourite reason for being in F :cool:.

No different to what it was a few years ago, and often one or two of the SIN arrivals grabs a 5AM slot, no big deal.

There is a maximum throughput of passengers specified for Sydney (int), so the airlines could go up to this.

Maximum Passenger Arrival Rate

3500 inward seats in any 30 minute period
6210 inward seats in any 60 minute period
 
The tasting menu option is only available ex-Syd and ex-Mel (e.g. QF31 / QF9). Ex-SIN, at the moment, you get a standard F lunch option (plus the any time options like breakfast croissants etc). There's no need to book anything

As QF32 becomes QF2 and becomes overnight, I assume that the food will become a dinner and/or breakfast option instead.

I have recent menus in both directions if you are interested in what's offered currently.
 
I'm having a thought if my first time on F is a waste since its overnight. I might just sleep for a bit in the afternoon prior to going onto the plane, so I can be awake and indulge!

I guess it really does depend what you are looking for. many people like first class simply because it is quiet and you are served what you want when you want. and can go to sleep as soon as you want once you take off.

flying first... the audio and movies are the same, there is still a meal service. you can't eat the entire flight. it's the same as flying economy in that respect.

where the difference comes is that after eating, when you feel tired and sleepy, in first class you can bed down and go to sleep. can't do that in economy. whether in first or economy you still have 6 hours of nothing to do between meals.

go first class and enjoy it :)
