This evening, Qantas will announce some changes to the way Frequent Flyer members earn in the air as of 1 July 2014. As a community that is most familiar with our program, I wanted you to be one of the first to hear about the changes.

Overall, the focus is on making it easier for members to understand the number of Qantas Points and Status credits earned by moving from a distance based calculation, to a zonal earn table for both Qantas and Jetstar. There are also some changes to Status credit earn with other partner airlines.

We believe it’s a fairer way to earn points and Status credits as it will now more closely reflect the fare paid, route travelled and airline you choose, versus the miles flown.

Some of the key changes that you may find most notable are:

- an opportunity to earn more with Qantas on flexible fares, including in premium cabins
- new minimum points guarantee, according to the fare purchased
- a simplified Qantas and Jetstar earn table
- the option to book Any Seat Awards in Classic Award fare classes (X, Z, U and P) will be removed from 1 July 2014

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify our position regarding “MASAs”.

This change was wrapped up into the announcement today largely due to the timing. However the reason behind the change is not linked.

As you know, the changes to our booking engine last year removed the ability to sell “MASAs” online. We acknowledged “MASAs” are a highly valued benefit for some of our members, and have always said that they were under review.

The decision has now been made to discontinue “MASAs” as they represent a short cut to tier status and add a significant cost without the revenue in return.

The financial realities of our business have been well publicised, and I hope you can see the logic.

Please do take the time to read through the changes via https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/fairer-flying. I’ll be closely monitoring this thread and passing on feedback to the various stakeholders concerned.

Thanks for the heads up Red Roo.
Can you please post a link to the changes to SC earn?
Thanks

Hmm doesn't sound good...this may change some of my spending /airline choices in the future away from QF most likely depending on the nature of the changes ... However thanks for the heads up none the less

Oh no, please don't call it an "enhancement" - well, it might be from QF perspective, but not ours.

I see a large spike of mASA bookings in the next week and in May/June 2014...as we devolve ourselves of excess points.

Looks like Stephanie's wish came true :o. But I disagree with the premise regarding the revenue. The QF partners are purchasing QFF points to reward us for making purchases (and QF reward us for direct travel related purchases from them). Therefore the points have an intrinsic value and when we buy mASA's, QF then reduces its liability AND get additional revenue (as there is a pay portion to most).

Whilst this won't affect most in FF-land who have no idea of how the program works, it will affect us mostly.

That appears to be the sole saving grace to me.
I'll reserve my opinion until I read the information on the website, however I can't see my position changing significantly.

MASAs were always going to be discontinued from the moment the ability to book them online was taken away.

Anyone who ever thought otherwise is deluding themselves.

I can see many millions of points being spent on MASAs between now and July 01.

Thank you Red Roo for giving us the advance 'heads up'. As a large community who are passionate flyers it is great that Qantas engages with us and long may it continue.

Points spending tonight! Not a good sign for QFF. They told us all that MASA's werent going anywhere!! Here to stay they said.

Lets just hope QFF dont do any more silly things to make frequent flyers unhappy.

VA here we come...!

But seriously to qualify this, we all new this was coming. Thats why we all been burning

Very important clarification required. Does that mean we can't book MASAs for travel after 1 July or only that we can't make MASA bookings after 1 July?

Reads booking wont be possible from July 1 to me. As in we have the three months to book for travel up to a year out.

Oh dear Red Roo...and we were told MASAs were definitely here to stay at the QF loyalty lunch last year :(

I don't have popcorn.... But QF has supplied me with an alternative.....

I have a feeling the trailers are ending and the main feature is about to begin .....

Interested to know the answer to this question too.

"MASAs" will no longer be available to book after 30 Jun 2014. Travel can be after this date.

Please note, existing bookings will not be impacted.
