Hi ,

I think that Qantas may no longer be flavor of the month when it comes to Woolworths EDW points earnings. I base this on two things.

I did a “one on one” 60 minutes session with a marketing company representing Woolies last week ( ? because I wrote to the manager of EDW). The rep told me he was in Brisbane for 2 days and both were fully booked with interviewees. Almost all questions related to my satisfaction with the ability to use QFF points earned as part of the Every Day Rewards program. The introduction referred to, among other things , status levels and utility of points, ability to get international travel with Qantas and alternatives to current airline points as a reward.

I also received yesterday a targeted online survey as did a family member at a different address. This was a more general one aimed at increasing my shopping spend at Woolworths stores. Some of the scenarios presented included earning QFF points but they were in the minority. When QFF was mentioned, the “conversion” was a two dollar spend getting one QFF point. There were questions re how useful QFF points were - even asking how useful they were for award vs upgrade and domestic vs international redemptions.

My “take” was that Woolies is looking for a more attractive incentive for their shoppers than QFF points.

The “one on one” discussed my ability to use QFF points, whether I had any status with Qantas (nil) and if I thought that made a difference to my level of satisfaction – of course it does , just try and get 2 business class award seats to or from the USA! Upgrades on those sectors are just a dream for non elites even if I have only 600,000 points to spend!

Most interesting at the “one on one” was a scenario where “Woolworths” points could be converted to an “Australasian” ( their words) based airline’s FFProgram plus,in addition, the customer would be offered an elite “status” level increase once a certain predetermined threshold of “Woolworths” points were earned. Maybe EDR have got the hint that it doesn’t matter how many dollars are spent at their stores and points earned. If you don’t have any status with Qantas, your chances of getting a meaningful benefit ( eg international upgrades etc) are close to zero! Despite several attempts, I could not get any indication of the specific airline in the scenario - maybe totally theoretical. If true, it would have to be someone like SQ, NZ or Thai (or maybe Virgin)

I would be interested in feedback from others chosen to be involved.

It seems though the Qantas Frequent Flier program may be joining its parent on the downhill run.

In store Big W spend was recently enhanced to 1 point per $2 over the $30 minimum. Online spend is still 1:1 though.

Maybe Woolies is going the same way!

My non status clients often get award point upgrades on QFi. It's not impossible, especially now they offer them at the gate too.

That's upgrades. Try getting award seats on QFi at anything less than 9-10 months in advance.

I should have been clearer - the interview and the online survey both referred to purchases at Woolies, BWS as well as Big W.

Still i think if you want to go anywhere outside if AU QFFP offers more options and destinations than VA. Despite all the flaws in the search engine it is still better than VA who pretty much limit you to VA/EY. Try getting a Rewards seat with their partner SQ - you'll spend a lifetime on the phone, and the points required for awards are pretty ridiculous. I think I still prefer QF points over VA as far as awards go. While availability is pretty restricted , going to Europe for instance, you have available way more destinations than VA/EY unless , again, you are prepared to spend ages on the phone and ask the person on the phone to search manually day by day. Painful. If VA could offer the same awards search options as QF with all their partners it would be much better.

Certainly not my experience for travel to the USA or to Asia.
Maybe that applies to members with status but I don't.
This is maybe one of the things that the survey is about - how valuable are QFF points if you have no status with QF?
My 600,000 points just can't get me anywhere overseas in J unless I book 353 or whatever days ahead and am prepared to leave my spouse in economy. ( In fact, it would be me that is down back for obvious reasons)

I'm not sure the mums & dads that would be the core of WW's customer base are that concerned with international ugprades or award space.
My parents are happy just to get a free flight from ADL-MEL every so often.

ozflier, if you can't use your 600,000 points, feel free to give them to me . I would think that you would have a lot of choices (QFF and OW) to redeem in J for two people. It's true you need to be well organised to search early and use some creative thinking but I would have thought it pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the offer.

My negative QFF experience has been with QF, BA and AA.

Book up 10-11 months ahead and ,with a bit of flexibility , you may be ok.

Try and travel in the US on QF points - only one F award available if at all on each flight.
plus
if you travel OW business award SYD, on QF to LA and connect to ORD on AA, you sit in coach.

Please don't get me started on BA and the minimum number of award seats they release to QFF.

I am not saying that award international business seats are impossible for non QF elites but they are hard to come by except with a lot of hassle and flexibility by date and routing.

I assume that EDR members who spend their money at Woolies do not see QFF as value for money in what you can get and how much hassle it is to get it.

Certainly , the suggestion of automatic elite status for a certain Australasian" airline would presumably help with availability to use their points.

The online survey indicated Woolies seems to be looking at money off at checkouts, petrol stations, vouchers for insurance,Masters, gifts etc as an alternative to any form of frequent flier points - no lottery there , no spending hours on the computer and phone to QF or having to travel via HKG to get from BNE to SIN on points.

I will have to try and use my points soon before all QF international travel is on Jetstar !

Gee Ozflier, if everyone they interviewed was like you they will cutting out QFF point earn immediately.

Re: Online survey and interview suggests QFF points for Woolies may be on the way out

It is really only the 500/750/1000 bonus point promotions which attract me now. Earning 10 points in a shop is not worth it if I can something cheaper at Coles.

Re: Online survey and interview suggests QFF points for Woolies may be on the way out

My wife gets QFF points on everyday card card, I dislike that hillarous episode of the AFF guy buying up every bit animal food packets all over Sydney and getting a J trip around the world for a spend of $2200, I still laugh about it. If any one has a link to it please post here.

But really I gather points from spending mainly just few from Everyday card, but as said its so hard if not impossible to get J seats OZ/USA so I've been using mine out of HKG to many places on CX/EK.

I'm sure that story is here on AFF somewhere. I read it once but can't remember which section it is in.

Re: Online survey and interview suggests QFF points for Woolies may be on the way out

Going by the number of AFFers posting in the EDR thread that they have shifted their spend over to Coles - I'm not surprised.

Re: Online survey and interview suggests QFF points for Woolies may be on the way out

I've found the ability to earn Qantas points a large incentive to shop at Woolworths, it would be a shame to see it go.

Re: Online survey and interview suggests QFF points for Woolies may be on the way out

QFi? What's that?

(sorry, I'm from PER)

Yes it works for me.

I just checked on QFF my earn from Everyday Rewards for 12 months and it is 30,511 QFF points.

I would guess that I average a spend of about $200 a week. Mainly at WOW on groceries. Occasionally at BWS.

So that is say spend $10K on what I would anyway for a benefit worth say $1000. I do also earn 30K of Amex MR Points. That is worth say $1500

But I do agree that at least for my circumstances that QFF is a coughpy FF program when you consider all factors.
However I would rather have the 30K of QFF points than not ;)
